Warning: This article contains Terminator: Dark Fate SPOILERS.
With the franchise going in a new direction, Terminator: Dark Fate 2 can take the story to the next level - and here's everything we know about its story and potential release date. The first two Terminator movies cemented their place in cinematic history, but the franchise stumbled after director James Cameron's departure. Fortunately, Cameron has returned for Terminator: Dark Fate, and he's effectively relaunched it.
Terminator: Dark Fate is a celebration of everything that made the first Terminator movies a success, reuniting Cameron with actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, while simultaneously introducing brand new heroes and Terminators. It's received mixed reviews but is expected to do well in the box office, with critics praising it as the sequel fans have waited 30 years for.
Of course, viewers are understandably primed to see Terminator: Dark Fate as a much-needed shot in the arm for what was generally perceived as a dying franchise. As a result, when the credits roll, there's intense interest for Terminator: Dark Fate 2.
James Cameron left the Terminator franchise because he didn't control the underlying intellectual property, and became interested in returning when the Terminator movie rights reverted back to him. From the outset, though, Cameron has insisted that his plan wasn't just to do one more film, a swan song for a much-loved brand; rather, he started to plan out "a three-film arc" that reinvented the franchise. He's already met with writers Chic Eglee and Josh Friedman to work out the overall direction. All this means that Cameron is presumably confident of getting the green-light for these sequels, even if they haven't been officially announced yet.
It's quite difficult to predict exactly when Terminator: Dark Fate 2 will release, given its unclear how developed the script already is. Certainly Cameron has suggested the overarching direction has been mapped out, and it's even possible some drafts have been prepared. Given that's the case, once the project is officially confirmed, it shouldn't be long before it begins shooting. Production on Terminator: Dark Fate began in June 2018 ahead of its November 2019 release, and a similar timescale is likely for the sequel. That means Terminator: Dark Fate 2 can release by mid 2021 or early 2022.
Cameron had always envisioned Terminator: Dark Fate as the passing of the baton to some new stars, and by the end of the film it's clear who those stars will be. Linda Hamilton can be expected to return as Sarah Connor, but now she's actually getting to fulfill her destiny, bringing up future human resistance leader Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes). No doubt the future's new AI tyrant, Legion, will continue to send Terminators back in time in order to kill Dani in an attempt to rewrite history. This time, though, Sarah and Dani won't have advance warning courtesy of Carl.
According to Cameron, one of the major themes that he wants to explore is the human relationship with artificial intelligence. "I feel that we set the stage or we set the table for that exploration," he explained, "and that... would take place in a second film and a third film." Terminator: Dark Fate introduced one fascinating new idea, with Mackenzie Davis' Grace transformed into a powerful cyborg, a blend of human and machine. Presumably other resistance fighters will have been enhanced in the same kind of way, fitting perfectly with Cameron's overarching themes and concepts.
