Every episode of Voltron: Legendary Defender season 8 in now available to stream on Netflix, but will there be a season 9? The reboot of the 1980s cartoon, Voltron: Defender of the Universe (which itself is a reworking of the Japanese anime, Beast King GoLion) has been a big hit for Netflix, filling a niche for serialized, action-comedy cartoons that's been lacking on the more traditional television networks.
Created by Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery for DreamWorks Animation Television, Voltron: Legendary Defender follows five pilots - Shiro (Josh Keaton), Keith (Steven Yeun), Lance (Jeremy Shada), Hunk (Tyler Labine), and Pidge (Bex Taylor-Klaus) - who after discovering a Lion of Voltron on Earth, are catapulted into the center of a galactic war. Each becomes a Paladin of Voltron, piloting one of the Lions and occasionally forming the giant robot defender, Voltron in order to fight against the Galra forces trying to conquer the universe.

Across Voltron's eight seasons, the Paladins - along with the Altean princess, Allura (Kimberly Brooks) - have weathered all sorts of obstacles and repeatedly saved the universe. Now it's time for their final battle. After thwarting the Galra's invasion of Earth at the end of season 7, Team Voltron takes the fight directly to them, looking to rid the universe of Witch Haggar and her evil once and for all.
Voltron Season 8 Is The Final Season
Voltron season 8 is truly the final battle for the Paladins. The season 8 finale wraps up each character's arc and brings an end to their conflict with the Galra. And while a spinoff or sequel isn't entirely out of the question, the ending of Voltron season 8 doesn't really hint at direction for such a series to go. Instead, season 8 is an emotional and satisfying conclusion to what's been a spectacular series, introducing a whole new generation to the franchise with a deeper and more nuanced telling of the Voltron saga.
Netflix Is Unlikely To Make Voltron Season 9
When it was announced Netflix had renewed Voltron for a fourth season it was also revealed that the streaming network was committed to a 78-episode order for the series. With season 8's 13 episodes, that 78-episode quota has been fulfilled. It's unlikely, then, that Netflix will seek any more episodes of Voltron from DreamWorks, and instead will continue developing any of the other series currently coming to Netflix from DreamWorks Animation (see below).
Additionally, Voltron series creators Dos Santos and Montgomery are already moving on to new projects. Dos Santos has been tapped to direct the forthcoming Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel, while Montgomery is in talks to tackle the Spider-Gwen spinoff. Still, it's hard to believe there won't ever be another Voltron series, just not anytime soon and probably not from the same creative team.
What To Watch After Voltron's Ending
After enjoying all eight seasons of Voltron: Legendary Defender, it can be hard to know what series to binge next, so here are our suggestions. If what you enjoy most about Voltron is the show's visual style and how it seamlessly blends action, comedy, and heart into a compelling narrative that matures alongside with its characters, then check Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra. Both Dos Santos and Montgomery worked on Avatar and Korra, and the shows' animators even went on to found Studio Mir, the studio responsible for animating Voltron, so the similarities in look and tone between the series are far from coincidental.
If you're more of a fan of the space setting, ships that transform into robots, and a coalition of heroes banding together to fight an alien threat, then check out one of the series from the anime franchise, Macross. In fact, Dos Santos and Montgomery are huge Macross fans and admit the anime was an influence for them when working on Voltron. Fortunately, Robotech just recently came to Netflix; However, the Avatar shows aren't easily streamed, so we recommend checking out one of these DreamWorks shows: another 1980's reboot, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, or one from Guillermo Del Toro's Tales of Arcadia series, Trollhunters and its upcoming sequel, 3Below, (releasing December 21st).
