Then Came You Trailer Stars Asa Butterfield & Maisie Williams

In the trailer for Then Came You, Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams and Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield live and learn while acknowledging an unfortunate truth.

Directed by Peter Hutchings and written by Fergal Rock, Then Came You focuses on Skye (Williams), a teenager with a terminal illness who forms a bond with another teenager named Calvin (Butterfield) who believes he may have testicular cancer. Together, they agree to live life to the fullest by checking off experiences on Skye’s bucket list. Opposite Williams and Butterfield, Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl) have supporting roles, along with comic actors such as David Koechner (Anchorman, Krampus), Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Crazy Rich Asians), and Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). Then Came You was produced by Shout! Studios and marks Hutchings’ third feature after the 2012 comedy Rhymes with Banana starring Zosia Mamet (Girls) and the 2017 Victoria Justice film The Outcasts.

Per Deadline, Then Came You's trailer has been released, with the tagline “Living in the Moment Is Hard to Do Alone” underlining the narrative themes. See the trailer and poster for Then Came You below.

To begin, Calvin reads about testicular cancer but learns that his “health problems aren’t physical.” There’s a brief moment of comedy to open the clip, which smoothly transitions to the focus on Williams’ Skye, a character with Manic Pixie Dream Girl qualities. The two meet at a support group, and it’s revealed that Calvin is a hypochondriac and not dealing with a terminal illness. The moment at once channels a key narrative thread in Fight Club - which features not one, but two characters who lie about health issues - while also upping the inherent drama. From there, the narrative tone picks up when the two leads decide to travel with the hopes of completing Skye’s “To Die List,” which allows the film to introduce its comedic stars for situational humor. While the subject matter is indeed difficult, the trailer accentuates the characters’ everlasting bonds and how they make each other better.

In addition to unveiling the trailer for Then Came You, Shout! Studios also released a colorful poster, which features the two leads framed within a heart, in addition to Dobrev’s character — a telling image based on her character's interactions with Butterfield’s Calvin in the clip. The poster also promotes seven cast members at the top, thus suggesting the film will be less of a traditional love story and more of an ensemble film about personal connections, and how small gestures go a long way. Though Williams is a recognizable pop culture figure given her role as Arya Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, the 21-year-old Butterfield is mostly known for his work as a child actor, in films like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008), Hugo (2011), and the aforementioned Ender’s Game.

Based on the trailer, Williams and Butterfield's chemistry seems to complement the comedic aspects.
