The Saga of Tanya the Evil anime movie has revealed new character artwork. With the premiere of the anime film less than two months away, Kadokawa Animation has released the first full look at the returning cast, as well as the antagonist of the film.
The Saga of Tanya the Evil tells the story of a black-hearted and calculating Japanese business man given a second chance at life when he's reincarnated into a parallel world on the brink of a World War I-style conflict as a young girl with magical powers. The anime series initially released in January 2017 and managed to find a devoted following. In fact, supporters of the series were so avid for more that the director of the series, Yutaka Uemura, recently revealed in Newtype magazine that there had been no original intention to create a film following the conclusion of the series. Now, Uemura, along with much of the team that worked on season 1, will also be directing the anime film, planning to expand upon the series in interesting ways.

The official website of The Saga of Tanya the Evil posted a collection of art depicting the main characters along with descriptions of each figure. Many fans of the anime series will remember the majority of the characters shown, but the most notable new face belongs to the film’s main antagonist - a young veteran of the battlefield named Mary Sue, who was introduced in the finale of season 1. This builds on the anime as her father, Anson Sue, died in battle against Tanya in episode 11. Driven to exact justice for his death, Mary takes up a gun and enlists in the war herself. This sets her on a path to collide with Tanya and the forces under her command.
The anime film version of Tanya the Evil will not be a compilation film. Instead, it picks up shortly after the ending of season 1, which left our monstrous protagonist embroiled in a truly world-spanning war, daring god to strike her down. Returning from the campaign to finish off the remnant’s of the Republic’s forces, Tanya and her squad are sent to hold the line against the Russy Federation as the Allied Kingdom’s forces move against the Federation as well. Unfortunately, Mary Sue’s hatred of the Empire, and especially of Tanya, could drag all three states into conflict with one another, potentially destroying the world.
The Saga of Tanya the Evil stands as a really interesting look at wartime pressures and the malleable nature of evil. Some people break under the intense pressure and others manage to thrive in the bureaucracy and death. An action might be abhorrent in one scenario, but considered the most praiseworthy action in another context. It manages to explore the concept of war with a cynical eye and a heart that genuinely understands how people care for one another. Armed with the same team that wove such an interesting program in the first place, the film about an evil commander is surely in good hands.
