Star Wars: The Mandalorian TV Show Casts Nick Nolte

Nick Nolte becomes the latest actor to join the cast of the Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian. Spearheaded by Jungle Book and Lion King director Jon Favreau, the series is currently in production, ahead of its 2019 premiere on the Disney+ streaming service. In typical Lucasfilm fashion, plot details are being closely guarded, but it's known the show takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, following a lone gunman type through a lawless corner of the galaxy far, far away.

The Mandalorian's cast is one of the more secretive aspects of the show. Pedro Pascal is said to be in the starring role, and he's joined by Deadpool's Gina Carano. Other than that, the ensemble has been subject to multiple rumors, including reports about Carl Weathers. Fans are eagerly awaiting future announcements about who else is joining, and now an Oscar nominee is part of the ever-expanding franchise.

According to THR, Nolte is the next official addition to The Mandalorian. Unsurprisingly, his exact role is under lock and key for the time being, so it's anybody's guess as to who he might be playing.

Regardless of the exact nature of the character, Nolte should prove to be a valuable addition to the Star Wars property. His lengthy career spans several genres - ranging from comedy (48 Hours) to drama (The Thin Red Line) and everything in between. Nolte has also demonstrated tremendous acting chops throughout his prolific career, picking up a trio of Academy Award nods. The most recent of those came in 2011's Warrior, so he remains a force to be reckoned with even as he fast approaches his 78th birthday. No matter what Favreau and company have in mind for Nolte, odds are he'll be able to handle the material with skill and create another memorable figure for Star Wars fans to fall in love with. It'll be interesting to learn how the actor fits in as more information is revealed.

As for when that'll be, fans likely have a ways to wait. Perhaps when The Mandalorian wraps production, Lucasfilm will share more details, but right now the best landing spot looks to be Star Wars Celebration 2019, which takes place in April. Obviously, Episode IX is going to be a centerpiece of the convention as the studio starts to drum up hype for their upcoming cinematic release, but Lucasfilm will also want to shine a light on their TV slate. With the movies said to be going on a brief hiatus, it'll be up to The Mandalorian and the recently-announced Cassian Andor prequel show to carry the torch and keep the Star Wars franchise alive.
