Spider-Verse All-Female Spinoff Will Include Spider-Woman & Silk

Spider-Woman and Silk are joining Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) for the Spider-Women movie, the all-female Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spinoff. Sony has their hands full with Spider-Man related projects with three different universes currently ongoing. Their latest is in the world of animation and they already have big plans for the Spider-Verse franchise to continue growing.

Spider-Verse focuses on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), but also introduces Gwen Stacy and four other Spider-People. In doing so, the standalone movie opens the doors for several other sequels and spinoffs, which is exactly what Sony is planning. They previously confirmed plans for a Spider-Verse sequel and all-female spinoff are currently being developed. The female spinoff will be directed by Lauren Montgomery and promote Gwen Stacy from a scene-stealing supporting character to the lead. But, the Spider-Women film will also be responsible for introducing several other female Spidey characters in this universe. And now we know the exact ones who will be joining Gwen.

Vanity Fair spoke to several people involved with Spider-Verse to discuss the new film and future plans. Producer Amy Pascal was one of the individuals they talked to and she confirmed Jessica Drew aka. Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon aka. Silk will be part of the all-female team-up movie. It is not known at this time if the script to be written by Bek Smith will include additional heroes.

Jessica Drew first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #32 in 1977. Unlike many of the other Spidey related heroes, she does not get her super powers from the bite of spider, but rather from genetic experimentation as a child. She's gone on to become a prominent member of the Avengers in the pages of Marvel Comics. Spider-Woman has appeared in several animated TV shows, but this could be her first appearance on the big screen.

Silk is a more recent addition to Marvel's roster of characters after debuting as a hero in Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 #4. She was created by Dan Slott and has an origin tied very closely to Peter Parker. She is bitten by the same spider as Peter, which results in the two of them sharing an extremely close bond that becomes a romantic relationship. Tiffany Espensen briefly plays Cindy Moon in Spider-Man: Homecoming but has not yet suited up, while Sony is also developing a live-action Silk spinoff movie.

Spider-Woman and Silk can both be viewed as fan-favorite characters that many have been waiting to see brought to life on the big screen in a larger fashion. This should be accomplished by this spinoff, which may not come until after the Spider-Verse sequel. The Vanity Fair article mentions that the sequel focusing on Gwen and Miles' romantic relationship will serve as a launch pad for the Spider-Women movie.
