Rupert Grint has been tapped for a role in M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming TV series that’s set for Apple’s streaming television service. The as-yet-untitled series is just one of several high-profile projects headed to the technology giant’s slate of original television programs (that will presumably be available to audiences in a form other than a press release or casting notice) intended to put Apple in the same conversation as Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu.
At present, Shymalan’s thriller has reportedly already cast former Six Feet Under star Lauren Ambrose and Nell Tiger (Game of Thrones), with Ambrose playing a new mother named Dorothy and Tiger presumably playing Leanne, the nanny hired to help care for Dorothy’s child. Those are scant details to be sure, but the usual secretiveness surrounding most of Shyamalan’s projects, as well as Apple’s seeming reluctance to offer much in way of information for its television offerings means curious potential viewers will have some waiting to do before the true scope of this series comes to light.

As reported by Deadline, it sounds as though Grint will play a supporting role, as that of Julian Pearce, the younger brother to Ambrose’s Dorothy. Though one might think it appropriate for an actor of Grint’s standing (he was in one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, after all) he’d have a more prominent role — say, that of Dorothy’s husband — but given he and Ambrose bare a certain specific resemblance, it make sense they’ll be playing siblings.
Grint’s casting marks the latest big name to join one of Apple’s planned shows, as Steve Carell recently signed on for a major role in the Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon-led morning news drama. Meanwhile, Ron Moore’s space-race drama, For All Mankind, recently rounded out its primary cast with Joel Kinnaman, Sarah Jones (Alcatraz) and Patriot star Michael Dorman.
At present, these series all look great on paper (and on IMDB), but it will be another thing entirely once they finally begin premiering on Apple’s TV service —whatever form that will take. Now that these series appear to be moving forward, hopefully Apple will begin sharing more details about them and about how it plans to give its customers access to them.
