Netflix has released a list of its most binged TV shows and rewatched movies in 2018 from its expanding collection of original content. The streaming service famously refrains from revealing specific numbers in terms of the number of viewers it is bringing in for any given series or film - a noticeable deviation from the usual TV networks, which use this information to determine whether or not to cancel a program. The Netflix model, which has been emulated by other streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Hulu, has seen its fair share of critics but has drawn in the likes of Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes and American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy with exclusive contracts to create new content, promising artistic freedom unseen elsewhere.
Though Netflix began as an online Blockbuster where subscribers could rent DVDs and have them shipped to their door, it is now known for its streaming component, which came about in the mid-2000s. It then shifted to creating original content, beginning with the Emmy-winning series House of Cards. It also notably became the home of a collection of Marvel TV series, most of which have been canceled in recent months. Today, the streamer boasts a large number of original films and series, to varying degrees of popularity.

Now, Netflix is sharing some information about its content, though void of actual numbers. In a press release, the streamer shares three of the most rewatched movies from Jan. 1 through Nov. 28 this year; the 10 stars of its original series and films who saw the largest increase in followers on their Instagram accounts; and the 10 series with the "highest average watch time per viewing session." The press release notes that none of the lists are ranked.
In the movie category, romantic comedies reigned supreme. The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I've Loved Before were both rewatched by almost half of all Netflix users. Additionally, Roxanne Roxanne, which features Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, was also on the list.
The leads of The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys, including Joel Courtney, Joey King, Lana Condor, and Noah Centineo, all received an increase in social media followers this year. Other actors who similarly experienced a surge in popularity are Elite stars Miguel Herrán, Jamie Lorente Lopez, and Maira Pedraza, along with comedian Hannah Gadsby (Nanette), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka, and "The Fab Five" of the rebooted Queer Eye series.
Finally, the TV shows that earned the title of most-binged range the gambit in genre. They are coming-of-age series On My Block, the second season of true-crime series Making a Murderer, Season 2 of teen drama 13 Reasons Why, football documentary series Last Chance U: INDY, British drama Bodyguard, driving reality show Fastest Car, horror series The Haunting of Hill House, the second season of Canadian drama Anne with an E, controversial black comedy Instiable, and the penultimate season of one of Netflix's first original series, Orange Is the New Black. As previously stated, these are not in any particular order.
While many of these are of no surprise given the frequent press they received, this is an interesting look at the range of content the service puts out. As Netflix continues to grow and change, there may well be a shift in the genres and formats we see become more prevalent.
