A forthcoming Game of Thrones exhibition will bring to life over 80 scenes from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe, focusing on the events prior to the hugely successful television adaptation. Before the likes of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen became household names on HBO, the world of Westeros was first realized in Martin's series of books, the first of which hit shelves in 1996. Due to the immense amount of detail Martin includes, only a small fraction of his fictional creation has featured on-screen and large swathes of backstory have thus far gone unexplored.
This is all set to change with the announcement of Game of Thrones prequel series The Long Night. The final season of the flagship show is confirmed to air in April 2019, but with money clearly still to be made from the franchise, HBO will be delving into the history of Westeros and exploring the fabled generation-long winter that saw the Children of the Forest and the First Men do battle against the White Walkers. The series will star Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse and is slated to begin filming in February next year, ahead of a mooted 2020 release date.

While that's certainly a lengthy wait for Thrones fans, a new exhibition in Berlin offers another way for viewers to explore the world of Westeros. A team of 44 artists who previously worked on the HBO series have, with Martin's blessing, spent three years lovingly crafting artwork of places featured in the Game of Thrones world. With over 80 locations, the Unseen Westeros exhibition will be held in Berlin during January 2019 and will be completely free to the public.
One of the inherent issues with adapting such an epic series of books onto screen is how much material has to be cut and while Game of Thrones has achieved more success than anyone could've imagined, it was forced to drop a lot of Martin's extensive backstory. While The Long Night could certainly remedy this, the Unseen Westeros exhibition offers a fantastic and authentic opportunity for Game of Thrones fans to experience the fictional history of the show. Since authors from the TV production are involved, the exhibits are likely to be in keeping with the visual style and tone viewers will be familiar with.
The title of the exhibition might suggest a focus on areas within the continent of Westeros but there's a chance attendees could see some additional imagery of Essos or even a rare glimpse at the Africa-like Sothoryos. Within the Seven Kingdoms itself, fans could witness the Dornish Water Gardens, the Fist of the First Men or the Iron Islands' town of Lordsport, places that have seldom been seen, if at all, in the Game of Thrones TV series. There's plenty of possibilities to explore and fans will no doubt be thrilled to venture through the exhibition.
