Spider-Man will be regularly returning to cinemas over the next few years, thanks to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ ever-expanding production slate. Though he has been a superhero icon for decades, 2018 has seen the wall-crawling hero enjoy a period of unparalleled prominence in pop-culture. Spider-Man was a highlight of Avengers: Infinity War (despite his death). Then, Marvel’s Spider-Man – the blockbusting PS4 game – similarly wowed critics and fans alike. Finaly, his next movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, looks set to be the standout release of the holiday season. And that is all but a taste of what is yet to come.
Thanks to the unprecedented deal between Marvel and Sony, Tom Holland’s youthful iteration of Spider-Man has a long bright future as part of the MCU. However, Sony ultimately retains the motion picture rights to the Spidey mythos. As such, they are committed to bringing many of his friends and foes to the big screen, which they have already begun with the release of Venom.

In fact, along two full-on Spider-Man films being produced, eight spinoffs are currently in development. Here are all the Spidey-related titles that we can expect to see in the coming years.

Spider-Man: Far From Home - July 5, 2019
First and foremost, Spider-Man: Far From Home will swing into theatres July 5, 2019. Far From Home will not only mark Spider-Man’s fifth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will also be his second solo movie within the franchise. Tom Holland returns as the titular hero, along with much of Spider-Man: Homecoming’s cast, including Zendaya, Jon Favreau and Marissa Tomei. Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders are also confirmed to make an appearance as S.H.I.E.L.D. alumni Nick Fury and Maria Hill respectively. Indeed, it seems that Spider-Man: Far From Home will be a globetrotting, espionage-tinged affair, with Homecoming’s Jon Watts shooting the film across Europe and the UK.
Little is known about Far From Home’s plot overall, but it seems that after the calamitous events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, Peter Parker will attempt to take a summer vacation with his friends. Of course, in true Spider-Man fashion, things will become more complicated than intended. Outside of a possible teenage romance, Peter will have to tackle Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. Given the popularity of his last few appearances, fans are clamoring to know more about Spidey’s next MCU adventure. While many of the movies’ secrets will be kept until its release, audiences can expect a Spider-Man: Far From Home teaser trailer to drop very soon.
While it isn't confirmed, Holland is contracted for a third Spider-Man solo movie, which would likely aim for a 2021 release.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2
Even though Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is just arriving in cinemas, Sony already has plans for a sequel. To complement this spirited show of confidence, it appears that Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron) will helm the picture, taking over from Into the Spider-Verse’s three co-directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 22 Jump Street) are expected to be involved as well.
Since the project has only just been announced, there’s little to suggest when the animated sequel will be released, or what the plot of Into the Spider-Verse 2 will be. Despite this, it’s safe to assume that the second instalment will either feature more dimension-hopping exploits while following Miles Morales’ (Shameik Moore) fledgling superhero career, with previously unseen Spider-People thrown in for good measure.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse All-Female Spinoff
When news of an Into the Spider-Verse’s sequel dropped, the studio also disclosed that an animated, all-female spin-off is in the works. Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One, Voltron) is being eyed to helm the project, which is believed to focus upon Into the Spider-Verse’s Spider-Gwen (and possibly Peni Parker).
As it is with Into the Spider-Verse 2, its too early to determine what the story will be about. Audiences have seen little of Spider-Gwen or her world onscreen either. Nevertheless, putting her at the centre of a new movie is a savvy move on Sony’s part. Gwen’s voice is provided by singer and actress Hailee Steinfeld, whose popularity continues to rise. Plus, Spider-Gwen may be a relatively new addition to Spider-Man’s mythos, but since her creation in 2014 she has already become a beloved character. Indeed, out of Into the Spider-Verse’s line-up, Spider-Gwen’s appearance has generated the most excitement (besides Miles Morales, of course).
As such, the prospect of this all-female spinoff holds a lot of promise. Moreover, through Gwen audiences will be able to explore even more of the wonderful women in Spider-Man’s world, such as Madame Web and Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew). Not only is it a boom for female representation in cinema, it also gives viewers the chance to engage with all the wilder aspects of Spider-Man’s varied, longstanding canon.

Morbius - Likely July 10, 2020
Along with Sony’s animated efforts, they also have a plethora of live-action properties, continuing the Spider-Man villain shared universe started by this year's Venom.
Producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad confirmed that Morbius, The Living Vampire is Sony's next Marvel movie, with Jared Leto taking the title role. Charting the tragic tale of the biochemist-turned-vampire, the film is expected to begin shooting in February 2019 to meet the July 10, 2020 release date.

Venom 2 - Likely October 2, 2020
2020 also has an October 2 opening, which is assumed to be Venom 2. As the champion of their comic book universe, the film will likely see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock continue to be the Lethal Protector of San Francisco, likely going up against Woody Harrelson's Carnge. Considering that Hardy’s contract consists of three movies – and that Venom 2 could end up being as successful as the first – it’s very likely that a Venom 3 will turn up several years after that.

Other Films In Sony's Spider-Man Villain Series
Beyond 2020, the apparently-titled SUMC (Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters) is said to incorporate the lesser-known vigilante Nightwatch into its ranks. Luke Cage show-runner Cheo Hodari Coker is attached to the project, which would relate the tale of Doctor Kevin Trench, who witnesses the death of a technologically advanced vigilante at the hands of a terrorist group, only to discover that the dead hero is a future version of himself. Spike Lee was reportedly attached to the project, but he has since denied his involvement.
Furthermore, popular Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter is due to receive his first-ever cinematic outing. Using the iconic "Kraven’s Last Hunt" as a basis, Richard Wenk (The Equalizer) is scripting the big-game hunter’s movie which, like Nightwatch, is without a director or a release date.

Not all of Sony's live action efforts are about bad guys. The most recently discussed of these more heroic outings were the Silk and Jackpot solo movies, which would chart the origins of these newer female additions to Spidey’s mythos. There’s no word on who is writing or directing these movies though, so, as it is with the Into the Spider-Verse sequels, we do not know when they’ll be released.
There are other SUMC movies with a more turbulent development. It was reportedly due to count a Mysterio movie among their number. However Mysterio is soon set to appear in Far From Home, so this idea seems to have been discarded. Silver and Black has similarly hit a snag early in its development; the movie was originally due to follow the adventures of Spider-Man’s friends (and sometime enemies) Black Cat and Silver Sable. Screenwriter Lisa Joy (Westworld) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) each tackled the script before Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees) came aboard to write and direct the picture. However, in August 2018, it was announced that the film would be split into two solo movies, and that Prince-Bythewood was no longer directing, though she would receive a producer credit. There has been no mention of either film since then.

Yet with access to over 900 comic book characters, the future looks bright for fans of Spider-Man’s varied and ever-growing mythos. If Sony is able to serve justice to these properties – as they have for Into the Spider-Verse – then they will be enticing cinema-goers to enjoy even more superhero movies for years to come.
