Dora the Explorer Movie: Benicio del Toro to Voice Swiper the Fox

Paramount's Dora the Explorer adaptation has brought on a new cast member, with Benicio del Toro voicing the nefarious fox Swiper. While this is a live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon animated TV series, it seems this fox will be showcased through some form of CGI or perhaps photo-real animation. Regardless of how he's portrayed or displayed in the film, del Toro is just the latest talented addition to quite a diverse cast.

Isabela Moner stars as the young Dora, with Michael Pena portraying her father, Eva Longoria playing her mother and Adriana Barraza playing Abuela Valerie. The story follows Dora as she enters high school after a childhood of adventures with her parents. When her parents go missing, Dora, her cousin Diego (Jeffrey Blanchard) and a group of teenage friends must go on a new adventure to save them, while also trying to solve a new mystery about a lost Inca civilization.

This new report from THR about del Toro's casting also adds that principal photography has recently wrapped on Dora the Explorer, which started production in August when the first-look photo of Isabela Moner as Dora was released. The cast also includes Eugenio Derbez as the villain, Alejandro Gutierrez, who has been described as a rogue explorer, along with Temuera Morrison as Powell and Q'orianka Kilcher as Inca Princess Kawillaka. While Dora's best friend, a monkey named Boots has been confirmed as part of the film, there has been no indication as to who may voice this character, but now that we know who's voicing Swiper, the Boots casting announcement may be imminent.

James Bobin is directing Dora the Explorer from a script by Nicholas Stoller and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, with Kristin Burr producing. Paramount has set up this project through its new Paramount Players division, which has been established to create new films based on Paramount and parent company Viacom's properties. Paramount has handed out an August 2, 2019 release date, a busy weekend that also includes Universal's Fast & Furious spinoff with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and 20th Century Fox's New Mutants. Since none of those projects necessarily cross over with Dora's fan base, that could bode well for this live-action hero at the box office.

While it remains to be seen how Swiper will actually look on the big screen, del Toro is the perfect choice to voice this villainous character, while continuing to embrace the original animated show's Latinx roots. Moner revealed in June the script, "captured everything that audiences would have wanted to see," and now that production has wrapped, the wait for the first trailer begins, to see if the movie lives up to this potential. Interestingly enough, Moner's last film role was in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, where she starred alongside del Toro. Now fans will get to see the two square off as a teen icon and a conniving fox on the big screen in Dora the Explorer.
