Charlie's Angels star Naomi Scott announces that filming for the movie reboot has officially wrapped. Led by Scott, Kristen Stewart, and Ella Balinska as the titular crime-fighters, Sony Pictures began production in September. The project has been spearheaded by Elizabeth Banks, who will be directing and playing one of the Bosley characters. In 2017, Banks starred opposite Scott as the villainous Rita Repulsa in Saban's Power Rangers reboot.
The franchise has undergone multiple revivals since the original 1970s series. Although the 2000 film starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore was a hit, the sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle was a disappointment, and ABC's 2011 TV series didn't make it past four episodes. For her part, Banks has promised to revitalize the formula. In addition to Banks, Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounso will be playing Bosley characters, and an official photo has implied some more 007-esque jet-setting adventures will take place. Kristin Stewart revealed in an interview that the premise will involved a worldwide network of the Angels, rather than the just three. This idea was hinted at in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, through Demi Moore's character, who was a former Angel gone bad. However the films reportedly won't have any continuity between them.

Scott took to Twitter to let fans know that the final cut had been called for Charlie's Angels. No set photos of the trio have been released; however, Scott's emojis imply that like Farah Fawcett and Diaz, one of the Angels may be blonde. Check out the tweet below:
Charlie's Angels marks the third big-name franchise Scott has won a lead role in. Since starring as the Pink Power Ranger, Kimberly Hart, she's been set to play Princess Jasmine in Disney's live action Aladdin movie, which hits theaters on May 24th, 2019.
After this many attempts, skepticism about another Charlie's Angels is warranted. In fact, Lifetime's 2015 film The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story opens with series creator Aaron Spelling pushing for a revival of the original show in the late 1980s. The idea is rejected by the networks for being tired. Stewart's interview also suggested that the new film will go to greater lengths to avoid pandering to the male gaze by heavily exploiting the the sexuality of its protagonists. It's a new direction for the franchise, since sexy costumes were very much a part of the detective work in Diaz, Liu, and Barrymore's films.
Banks appears to be echoing the message that crime fighting women need not be gratuitously objectified in order to be formidable action heroes that make a big impact on moviegoers. With cinematic examples like Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther's Shuri, Nakia, and Okoye to draw from, there's reason to be hopeful about the Charlie's Angels reboot yet.
