Don Cheadle is coming for the dragon in the latest teaser for Showtime’s Black Monday. The new series takes a humorous (and by the amount of cocaine on display in the other trailers, excessive) look at Wall Street in the ‘80s, and, more specifically, the series’ namesake, which became the worst stock crash in Wall Street history. The series is created by Jordan Cahan and David Caspe, and the pilot is directed by executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
Aside from the talent behind the camera and the show’s eager embrace of its period trappings, Black Monday has a stellar cast that includes the aforementioned Cheadle, as well as Andrew Rannells, Paul Scheer, and Regina Hall, who is coming off a magnificent performance in Andrew Bujalski’s Support the Girls (Pro Tip: check this movie out on VOD now). The series also includes supporting roles from Casey Wilson (Happy Endings), Kurt Braunohler (Bunk), and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

Mostly though, Black Monday looks like it wants to have some fun at the expense of the prototypical Wall Street trader and their “Greed is good mentality,” as well as that of unchecked capitalism in general. That’s fairly apparent in the new teaser as Cheadle’s dragon chasing seems anchored to more than one metaphor. Check out the new trailer and take a look at the poster for the series below:
“BLACK MONDAY takes viewers back to October 19, 1987 – aka Black Monday, the worst stock market crash in the history of Wall Street. To this day, no one knows who “caused it” … until now. It’s the story of how a group of outsiders took on the blue-blood, old-boys club of Wall Street and ended up crashing the world’s largest financial system, a Lamborghini limousine and the glass ceiling.”
All in all, Black Monday looks like it will be an appealing addition to the Showtime library. It’s certainly a far cry from Cheadle’s previous offering with the network, House of Lies, which, though it bares some similarities in terms of its dealing with financial institutions, didn’t quite have the rambunctious attitude that this series seems to be selling itself on at every turn. Time will tell if Black Monday is a hit, but so far it looks to be one of the more compelling new television offerings in 2019.
