The Game Awards: 2018 Nominees Revealed

There have been many incredible games released in 2018, and now the nominees for The Game Awards 2018 have been revealed. The annual ceremony celebrates achievements in the gaming industry, with past winners including The Witcher 3: Wild HuntOverwatch, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Game Awards celebrates individual games and game developers alike through a wide range of categories ranging from Best Role Playing Game and Best Art Direction to Best Mobile Game and Content Creator of the Year. The most coveted distinction, however, is the Game of the Year award, honoring the overall best achievement within the world of gaming. Now, with considerably strong competition, the nominees for 2018 awards have been released.

The official Twitter account for The Game Awards revealed the six nominees for the 2018 Game of the Year. The nominations include Marvel's Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2Monster Hunter World, God of War, Celeste, and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. Voting for The Game Awards includes a combination of public voting for gamers, which makes up ten percent of the vote, and an official voting jury, which makes up ninety percent of the vote. Public voting is open to everyone on the official Game Awards website, where gamers can also find the nominees for the other categories.

Apart from Game of the Year, several other games have been nominated across 30 different categories, with God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 leading with a tie for the most nominations. Both games were nominated for Best Audio Design and Best Art Direction, while other categories include Best Independent Game (including titles like Celeste, Dead Cells, Intro the Breach, Return of the Obra Dinn, and The Messenger) and Best Ongoing Game (including titles like Destiny 2: ForsakenFortniteNo Man’s Sky, Overwatch, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege). Likewise, the games ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission, Beat Saber, Firewall Zero Hour, Moss, and Tetris Effect were nominated in the relatively new category, Best VR/AR Game.

While previous Game of the Year winners at The Game Awards have arguably been obvious picks, this year will likely be more divisive among gamers, given the inclusion of several massively popular games. Fans have been waiting since 2010 for a Red Dead Redemption sequel, and most reviews for Red Dead Redemption 2 have been incredibly positive. That said, Spider-Man has also proven its worth by becoming PlayStation's fastest-selling game ever, and God of War and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey have been considered the best sequels of their respective franchises. Needless to say, it is going to be a tight race to the top spot.
