Sebastian Stan claims that he doesn't know if he's in Avengers 4 or not. He returned in Avengers: Infinity War as Bucky Barnes, but was one of the many victims to Thanos' finger snap. By all indications, Bucky is currently dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Stan has no clue what comes next.
Though he's not a leading man in the MCU, Stan's lengthy nine-picture contract indicates that Bucky will potentially have a more significant presence in future films. From trusty sidekick to brainwashed villain, Bucky hasn't just gone back to rejoining the good guys, but will even star in a recently announced series on Disney+ opposite Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie). Seeing as this series doesn't lend itself well to being a prequel at the moment, it's the latest sign that Bucky will be brought back to life in Avengers 4. However, even if this does turn out to be the case, Stan is currently playing coy to the idea that he'll be returning to the MCU.

While promoting the upcoming crime thriller Destroyer from director Karyn Kusama, Sebastian Stan spoke with Collider about Bucky's status post-Avengers: Infinity War, as well as the reported spinoff series. Stan revealed that he hasn't been told anything about the limited series, but added that Avengers 4 will answer a lot of questions. In fact, when asked about his filming experience on the follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War, Stan stated that he's not even sure if he'll be in Avengers 4 or not. He said:
"When I was shooting anything, nobody ever told me what was part one or part two. The truth is, I don’t even know if I’m in [Avengers 4]. What I shot was in part one. And anything that I shot may or may not have been in part one or part two and I still don’t know. There were things that we shot that were never gonna make it because it was easier to just convolute the whole thing. So in a way, you go ‘Alright, that’s cool, but…’ But you know it’s going to deliver on a level that we probably haven’t even digested yet. Because that’s what they do best."
Marvel Studios originally planned to film the third and fourth Avengers movies concurrently, so an actor could hypothetically film scenes for both movies within the same shooting schedule. However, the plan to film the movies back-to-back was scrapped. Still, though, considering Avengers: Infinity War wrapped July 2017 and Avengers 4 began production in August 2017, there is potential that Joe and Anthony Russo could have possibly overlapped some scenes to keep members of their cast in the dark in terms of which of the two movies they were filming. This lack of clarity especially extends to reshoots for Avengers: Infinity War, blurring the lines even more so between the two movies. And, with that being the case, do we take Stan at his word that he may not have filmed scenes for Avengers 4?
Given that Stan has already revealed a potential spoiler (he name-dropped Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Samuel L. Jackson as making appearances in Avengers 4, all of whom had yet to be confirmed to star), it's likely that he'll be showing up in the upcoming sequel in some way or another. The likeliness of this happening is especially strong considering that Avengers 4 reportedly includes a scene that will feature up to 76 characters. This suggests that these characters - and likely many other MCU heroes - will appear together in the movie. Stan may not be confirming publicly that he's starring at the moment, but fans should fully expect to see Bucky alongside other MCU characters who fell victim to Thanos' finger snap in Avengers 4 next year.
