Red Dead Redemption 2 Legendary Animal Locations & Requirements

Hunting is one of the biggest activities available in Red Dead Redemption 2, but finding and conquering the game’s several Legendary Animals is a slightly different – and more difficult – affair altogether. Those unprepared for these challenges and requirements may find themselves quickly in over their heads.

Red Dead Redemption 2 features nearly 80 different regular species of animals in its vast open world setting, adding to the realistic and lived in feel that Rockstar went for with its latest entry in the Red Dead franchise. Additionally, there are also 16 different Legendary Animals available for hunting. While the actual process is somewhat similar to normal hunting, players will have to take some extra steps to hunt these more dangerous creature. Still, these Legendary Animals offer much more valuable rewards than their standard counterparts and will prove ultimately worth it to any player brave enough to track them down.

This guide will offer locations for all Legendary Animals and any of the prerequisites players need to meet to find them. While most are available as soon as Chapter 1 is completed, some do require certain missions or ranks to be completed first.

Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear

First of the six Legendary Animals that has a prerequisite other than completing Chapter 1, the Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear will become available to players once they complete the “Exit Pursued By a Bruised Ego” mission in Chapter 2. The mission will see players teaming up with Hosea to track the bear down, though the bear won’t actually need to be killed in the mission. The bear is located north of O’Creagh’s Run, beside a mountain up the path. It’s recommended that the player use a sniper rifle and land headshots until the bear is dead. Unlike the other animals on this list, there are only two clues that need to be followed to find the Bharati Grizzly.

Legendary Bullgator

The Legendary Bullgator is first featured in the Chapter 4 mission “Country Pursuits” but many players have reported that the animal can’t be hunted until after Chapter 6 begins. Either way, the Bullgator can be found in Bayou Nova west of Lakay. Follow the three clues using Arthur Morgan’s tracking mode where players will come face-to-face with the animal. This is easily one of the hardest hunts in Red Dead Redemption 2, and the best strategy involves using a combination of dynamite, sniper rifle, and the Repeater pistol.

Legendary Giaguaro Panther

To hunt the Legendary Giaguaro Panther, players will need to reach Master Hunter challenge rank nine. It can be found in the Lemoyne area west of Shady Belle. Players should use the Cover Scent item just before beginning the hunt as the panther can easily detect human scent and it will make the fight all the harder to complete. As for the best strategy, equip the sniper rifle and a shotgun, and utilize Deadeye to put the animal down. (Image via TagBackTV)

Legendary Cougar

The Legendary Cougar will require players to finish Chapter 6 to gain access to the area, which is Gaptooth Ridge west of Tumbleweed. The strategy involved is quite similar to the Giaguaro Panther, so make sure you have Cover Scent on your person and a shotgun and sniper rifle equipped. For best results, as with many of these hunts in Red Dead Redemption 2, make sure to use Deadeye when necessary to kill the animal as quickly as possible.

Legendary Pronghorn

The second of three animals that requires players to complete Chapter 6 in Red Dead Redemption 2 is the Legendary Pronghorn, which can be found at Rio Del Lobo Rock, somewhere east of Fort Mercer. One of the few Legendary Animals that isn’t immediately aggressive toward the player, the pronghorn is still fast. Like with all the other Legendary Hunts, follow the three clues with Eagle Eye tracking mode and make sure to bring a sniper rifle or something with a lot of power to put the animal down as fast as possible. This particular animal can be carried whole to the Trapper.

Legendary Tatanka Bison

The third and final animal that will require completion of Chapter 6 in order to access is the Legendary Tatanka Bison, which is located at Hennigan’s Stead southeast of MacFarlane’s Ranch. Another animal that is not aggressive (and more likely to flee once the bullets start flying) the bison is quite a large animal. With this in mind, it’s best to use something powerful like a sniper rifle or bow to bring the animal down. A few well-placed headshots from the side of the bison is probably the best strategy to utilize. (Image via LeonidasJulian)

Legendary Wolf

The Legendary Wolf can be found in Cotorra Spring west of Bacchus Bridge. A rather difficult fight given the flat landscape, it’s recommended that a sniper rifle be used from a distance to take the animal down. Failing this, if the wolf gets to close use a shotgun combined with Deadeye to put the Legendary Wolf down once and for all. (Image via OrcCorp)

Legendary Boar

The Legendary Boar can be found in the wetlands of Bluewater Marsh north of Lagras. Players will know they’re in the right area if there’s an abundance of normal boars roaming the area. Not aggressive, the best method for putting the Legendary Boar down includes using either a sniper rifle or a bow. Once again, headshots are recommended for quick results and a couple of shots with either weapon should do the trick.

Legendary Moose

The Legendary Moose’s location is near Roanoke Ridge somewhere at the northeast part of the map. The moose is not aggressive and it’s honestly one of the easier Legendary Animal hunts in Red Dead Redemption 2. For strategy, simply use a bow and get in a few headshots and the moose should go down without much fuss.

Legendary Bighorn Ram

Found on a rock hill near Cattail Pond, west of Valentine, the Legendary Bighorn Ram will flee if you fail to kill it quickly or it picks up the player’s scent. Cover Scent can be useful, but it’s not necessary if a couple of well-placed shots to the head with the bow are utilized quickly enough.

Legendary White Bison

Located at the northern part of Lake Isabella, which is at the western part of the Grizzlies, the Legendary White Bison can be tough to put down but not overly aggressive. A shotgun, repeater rifle, or sniper rifle are probably the best weapons to use, and it’s also recommended that players dress warmly before embarking on this hunt (or risk having the bitter cold drain their health).

Legendary Beaver

The Legendary Beaver is found southwest of Butcher Creek and is probably the easiest Legendary Animal hunt in Red Dead Redemption 2. Found on the shore of Butcher Creek, a powerful headshot from the player’s bow should be enough to take the beaver down instantly.

Legendary Buck

Found northwest of Strawberry in Big Valley, the Legendary Buck can be a trial in patience for the player. A lot of trees surround the area, making well-placed shots all the more difficult. Remember to utilize the Eagle Eye tracking mode as much as possible and to be patient. It’s probably best to bring a longer range weapon such as a sniper rifle and again try to aim for headshots.

Legendary Coyote

The Legendary Coyote is located at Scarlett Meadows northwest of Rhodes. One of the three clues is a sheep carcass, and it’s best to let the coyote approach this carcass before trying to kill the coyote (the animal is very fast, otherwise). Use a sniper rifle to kill the animal and a knife to finish it off (if needed). The animal is rather small and is one of the few that can be carried whole to the Trapper.

Legendary Elk

Found on a hill north of a train track leading east to toward Bacchus Station, the Legendary Elk will flee when attacked. However, it has a habit of coming back to that location so chasing it down isn’t actually necessary. Use a bow or sniper rifle and get some headshots in for the kill.

Legendary Fox

North or Rhodes and around Mattock Pond, the Legendary Fox is another animal located in an area with an abundance of trees. On the bright side, the fox is white and larger than a normal run-of-the-mill fox, so it should be very easy to spot in such a green area. It’s usually found on the shore of Mattock Pond. One headshot from a bow or sniper rifle should be enough to kill the Legendary Fox.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a ton of Legendary Animals to offer players and the varied methods and locations of these creatures should offer hours of fun and challenge for not only the hunting inclined but the completionist as well. Remember to take Legendary Animal pelts to the Trapper for rewards and unique upgrades.
