Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
-
Sabrina Spellman's dramatic decision in the season finale of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina may have shocked and dismayed some viewers, but star Kiernan Shipka says that all is not as it seems. The supernatural teen drama recently debuted on Netflix, with Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa successfully bringing another corner of Archie Comics to the small screen. Set in the town of Greendale, down the road from Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 1 saw the half-witch-half-mortal Sabrina struggling to maintain a balance between her two lives.
At the start of the series, Sabrina makes the decision to run out on her own Dark Baptism - refusing to sign her name in the Book of the Beast in exchange for power, because she feared losing her free will. However, the machinations of Madam Satan ultimately forced Sabrina to make a choice in the season 1 finale: leave her friends to be slaughtered by the vengeful ghosts of thirteen hanged witches and their summoned Angel of Death; or sign the book and receive her full powers, allowing her to save her friends, but turning her into Satan's servant. Sabrina chooses the latter.

Strangely, the last time we Sabrina in season 1 she's looking smug and confident rather than defeated - which seems at odds with the decision she's made. Shipka addressed Sabrina's lack of despair in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that Sabrina definitely hasn't scrapped her plan to defeat the Dark Lord. In fact, signing the book and receiving her full powers has become the basis for a new plan:
"It's not Sabrina resigning. It's Sabrina taking on a bigger, greater challenge because she has an agenda... It took the season for her to realize her own power, what she could do with it, how she could change things. I think that's the major difference from the second episode to the 10th. It's the fact that now she's more herself than ever, and she knows that in this moment the only thing that she can do is make this decision because she's going to use it get her way and what she thinks is right."
Signing the Book of the Beast means that Sabrina has to come when the Dark Lord calls, and the end of season 1 also revealed that Satan may ultimately be planning to make Sabrina his Queen. However, Sabrina herself declared her intention to somehow beat the Devil himself, and it sounds like she hasn't been swayed from that plan. Season 2, which is already being filmed, could see an interesting chess game played between the determined teenage witch and the King of Hell - and somehow, we wouldn't be surprised if Sabrina emerged victorious.
As Sabrina joined the Weird Sisters in their clique at the Academy of Unseen Arts, she also debuted a new look: platinum blonde hair. "That kind of physical change always feels right for characters, especially when they reflect their personal growth, so I was into it," Shipka told The Hollywood Reporter. "She's becoming one with her witchiness."
It's certainly a relief to hear that Sabrina hasn't given up the fight against the Dark Lord - and we can't wait to see her show off some more of her new powers in season 2.
