The new year just got a whole lot more unfortunate with Netflix announcing the release date for the final season of A Series of Unfortunate Events for 2019. The show is now in its third season, which will cover the final three books (The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril, and The End) of Lemony Snicket's beloved series. Season 1 covered books 1-4 and season 2 followed books 5-9 with two episodes dedicated to each book.
Season 2 saw the Baudelaire orphans, Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes), and Sunny (Presley Smith) take their futures into their own hands. Rather than being shuffled around from one uncaring guardian to the next, they went on the run, which led to them living in a pretty horrible hospital and taking refuge in a carnival. It also brought them closer to finding answers about VFD, the mysterious organization that has connections to both their parents and Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris). The second season ended with a (literal) cliffhanger.

Netflix has released a video for the third and final season of A Series of Unfortunate Events. It shows Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton) and Count Olaf narrating their version of the previous seasons events. Of course, Count Olaf is a little more giddy at the misfortunes that have befallen the orphans and Lemony is his usual dour self. The video also reveals a release date of January 1st, 2019 - a Monday, which is unusual for a Netflix series. However, it does seem like the perfect way to unwind on New Year's Day. You can watch it below.
What's interesting about this video is that it promises, "The truth behind the letters VFD." Readers of the book series know that the final book in the series, The End, left more questions than answers. It proved frustrating for fans who had stuck with the series throughout the years (the books were published from 1999-2006) hoping for an answer about who started the fire that killed the Baudelaire parents. Subsequent books released by the real Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) provided more clues, but never all of the answers. Will this final season finally give book readers the closure they desire?
Whether or not the whole truth is revealed, the third season will be a fun ride. Book 11, The Grim Grotto, takes place on a submarine while book 12, The Penultimate Peril, takes place in a hotel that serves as a hiding place for VFD. The End takes place on an island. So far the Netflix series has stayed pretty close to the books, while also adding their own spin. Hopefully the final episodes will do the same while providing fans with some of the answers they need.
