Wonder Woman 1984 is the sequel to 2017's Wonder Woman, which is indisputably the most successful entry in the DCEU to date. Diana's origin story received widespread critical acclaim and did very well at the box office, raising the demand for a followup. Patty Jenkins returns to direct, guiding a cast led by Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristin Wiig, and Pedro Pascal.

Gal Gadot is Back as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 2
Gal Gadot is reprising her role as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 2. It's her fourth time portraying the iconic Amazon since making her debut as the DC superhero in Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. She also played Wonder Woman in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman and Snyder's Justice League in 2017.
Although rumors suggested Gadot was considering dropping out of the sequel if producer Brett Ratner and his RatPac production company remained on board, she said that those discussions never went that far and that she always intended on returning for the sequel.

Chris Pine Returns As Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 2
Chris Pine's Steve Trevor heroically died at the end of the first Wonder Woman, but some of the first reports about the sequel (our scoop) indicated he would return. While it remains to be seen how exactly Trevor comes back, we can definitively state Pine is in the movie. As production starts, director Patty Jenkins tweeted a photo of Pine on set, with the caption, "Welcome to Wonder Woman 1984, Steve Trevor."

Kristen Wiig is Cheetah In Wonder Woman 2
There was much discussion regarding who Wonder Woman 2's villain would be. Cheetah was the most likely option, and it's been confirmed that's what is happening. While several big name actresses like Sarah Paulson and Charlize Theron expressed interest in playing the antagonist, it was former Saturday Night Live standout Kristen Wiig who landed the part. Director Patty Jenkins made the announcement herself and is excited to work with the Oscar nominee. She later released an official image of Wiig as Dr. Minerva.

Wonder Woman 2 Has An Official Synopsis
Patty Jenkins previously expressed interest in having Wonder Woman 2 take place in the present day, but Screen Rant exclusively confirmed in summer 2017 that the sequel will take place in the 1980s and see Wonder Woman taking on the Soviet Union during the final days of the Cold War. This will take Diana away from the front lines into the world of espionage. An official synopsis has been released, confirming the 1980s setting and Diana's impending battle against Cheetah.

The Official Title Is Wonder Woman 1984
Wonder Woman 2 was never the confirmed title for the sequel. Fans learned the actual name of the movie is Wonder Woman 1984. Warner Bros. made the announcement to commemorate the start of filming. The title is obviously a reference to the movie's Cold War-era setting, indicating the events take place in the year 1984. Much like the first Wonder Woman, this will be a period piece.

There Isn't a Wonder Woman 2 Trailer Yet
Given that the film is expected to start shooting in summer 2018, and is slated to release in June 2020, a full-length trailer most likely won't debut until early or mid 2019 at the earliest. Warner Bros. did screen footage of Wonder Woman 2 at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, just as they've done at past cons for Justice League and Suicide Squad.
There Isn't a Wonder Woman 2 Poster Yet
Posters for Wonder Woman primarily highlighted the characters' strengths: Courage, Power, and Wonder. The sequel's posters should do the same, but not one has released yet. A poster should release around the time the film wraps production and starts marketing.
How Wonder Woman 2 Connects To The DCEU
Wonder Woman 2 will be another standalone adventure with few connections to the overarching DCEU. In September 2017, DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns and DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson revealed that they are no longer interested in forcing DCEU movies to connect to each other anymore. Plus, the movie takes place in the 1980s, and there isn't a way to connect the story to the rest of the Leaguers since they won't be around until the present day.

Patty Jenkins is Directing Wonder Woman 2
Patty Jenkins is returning to direct Wonder Woman 2. And thanks to the overwhelming success of the first movie, she's receiving a huge bump in her salary. Jenkins is now the highest-paid female director in Hollywood. It's well-earned considering that she helmed the fifth biggest superhero movie of all-time at the domestic box office and paved the way for future female-led superhero films.

Patty Jenkins, Geoff Johns, and David Callaham Are Writing Wonder Woman 2
Before Patty Jenkins officially agreed to direct, she began writing a treatment for the film with DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns, who produced the first movie and had "a cool idea" for the second one. A few days after Jenkins signed on the dotted line and started working on the sequel, Warner Bros. hired Godzilla and The Expendables scribe David Callaham to co-write the script with Johns and Jenkins.

Wonder Woman 2 Has Started Production
For a while, reports indicated Wonder Woman 1984 would begin filming at some point in summer 2018 in order to meet its fall 2019 release date. That's exactly what happened, as Warner Bros. made the flurry of announcements regarding the cast and story to signify the start of production.

Wonder Woman 2 Will Adopt PGA's Anti-Sexual Harassment Guidelines
Hollywood was engulfed by a seemingly never-ending stream of sexual assault and harassment claims in 2017, which has shown no signs of slowing down (nor should it, if there are allegations that need to be made). And the industry has responded by instilling new guidelines and rules. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) implemented their own anti-sexual harassment guidelines for its members, and it was revealed at the PGA Awards 2018 that Wonder Woman 2 will become the first movie to adopt the new rules.

Zack Snyder is Still Producing Wonder Woman 2
Zack Snyder not only cast Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman but also directed her in her feature debut as the iconic superhero in Batman V Superman. But his involvement with the character didn't stop there. He also developed Wonder Woman's story along with Patty Jenkins in addition to producing the film, a role which earned him a nomination for Best Picture at the PGA Awards. And despite having stepped away from directing duties, he hasn't fully exited the DCEU yet. Snyder is still supposed to produce both Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2, although his role is likely "in name only," due to his past involvement with the character. His creative influence on the DC Films universe moving forward will be minimal.
