Tom Hardy clarifies his comments regarding the deleted scenes in Venom. Tipped to give the Marvel anti-hero an origin story that is not dependent on Spider-Man, Sony crafted a brand new way to bring the symbiotes to Earth, resulting in Eddie Brock bonding with Venom. Hardy plays the titular character and is joined by a star-studded cast including Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Riz Ahmed as Dr. Carlton Drake, Scott Haze as Roland Treece, and Jenny Slate as Dora Skirth while Ruben Fleischer directed the film.
While doing the promo rounds for Venom before the premiere, Hardy revealed that "there are like 30 to 40 minutes worth of scenes that aren’t in this movie," some of which were among his favorite ones. This has caused an uproar from fans as they took the actor's comments negatively. But now, Hardy is clearing the air, telling everyone that it was just a misunderstanding.

Catching up with IGN at the red carpet during the premiere of the film, the actor was asked about his controversial comments regarding the deleted scenes in the movie. Obviously baffled, Hardy explained how he was misunderstood as he was referring to the improvised moments that had to be edited out of the movie rather than sequences that have a significant effect on the story. He added that everything he wants to be included in the film's narrative made it to the final cut of Venom saying: "Me, and the other executive producers know full well that has nothing to do with the story, but nevertheless would I like to watch a seven hour version of Venom? Yep, but that's just me as an actor but the truth of it is everything that we wanted is in the story Everything I want is in the story and more and the film is awesome and I’m excited and I just want to shoot a sequel." Sadly, fans aren't buying Hardy's explanation, most of them saying that it's part of Sony's attempt to damage control especially since initial reactions on the movie were mixed. While some critics enjoyed Hardy's performance and cited some brilliant scenes featuring Brock interacting with Venom, others pointed out that it felt oddly outdated with regard to the current landscape of the comic book movie genre. Given this, hearing Hardy sound genuinely enthusiastic on the prospect of filming a sequel makes the situation all the more unfortunate.
It's an understatement to say that there's a lot riding on Venom's shoulders. The film was supposed to kickoff Sony's own superhero interconnected universe centering on tie-in Spider-Man characters. Aside from the planned sequel where Woody Harrelson's Carnage will take the spot as the main antagonist, Jared Leto's Morbius the Living Vampire's fate also hinges on people's perception of the Hardy-starrer, as well as the Silver Sable and Black Cat standalone movies. It was even reported that Sony was hoping that a crossover between Venom and Tom Holland's Spider-Man (who exists in the MCU) will eventually happen.
