6. The Others
For those who love deftly-woven ghost stories, look no further than Alejandro Amenábar's The Others, a chilling period drama about a woman (played by Nicole Kidman) trying to keep her fragile family together after her husband is killed in World War II. As if being a single mother wasn't difficult enough, she soon becomes convinced that her house is haunted, as each day brings more unnatural happenings. If you've managed not to have this movie spoiled for you before, you're in for a real treat.
5. Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil
OK, we may have been lying a bit when we promised crazy chainsaw-wielding hillbillies. Directed by Eli Craig, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is actually a story about two good friends who have just bought a lovely cabin in the woods, and head out there for a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately for Tucker and Dale, the woods also contain a group of college students who jump to certain conclusions about our two heroes... and also end up running headfirst into their own deaths. Though it's more funny than scary, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil has an excellent mix of slapstick and gore that makes it perfect Halloween night viewing.
4. Let The Right One In
If you don't mind reading subtitles, Tomas Alfredson's darkly sweet vampire movie Let the Right One In is the perfect way to add some extra chill to the October air. In this movie, a lonely boy called Oskar is intrigued by his new neighbor - a girl who only goes out after dark, and who doesn't seem to ever get cold.
3. 10 Cloverfield Lane
Despite what the title might suggest, you really don't need to have seen Cloverfield before jumping into Dan Trachtenberg's 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror movie with enthralling performances from leads John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The latter plays a young woman who wakes up after a car accident in an underground bunker, and is told that she can't leave because the outside air is filled with some kind of poison. However, her "rescuer" (played by Goodman) turns out to be so creepy that the alleged poisonous air outside starts to seem like the more attractive option.
2. Hellraiser
Clive Barker's Hellraiser is a classic for a reason. Filled with relentless, gruesome, stomach-churning horror - brought to life by unforgettable practical effects - Hellraiser sees young Kirsty Cotton fighting for her soul after her Uncle Frank returns from the dead, pursued by otherworldly creatures called Cenobites. The key to either her damnation or salvation is a mysterious puzzle box, but can she figure out how to use it before the Cenobites tear her soul apart?
1. The Blair Witch Project
Yes, it's been parodied, ripped off, and dismissed as overrated many times in the two decades since its original release, but there's no denying that The Blair Witch Project is still one of the best examples of found footage horror done right. Made on a shoestring budget by Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, The Blair Witch Project follows three student filmmakers into some spooky woods, where they're planning to make a documentary about some of the strange and horrifying occurrences that have taken place in the woods' history. However, they soon find themselves subjected to some strange and horrifying occurrences of their own. The three actors did most of the camera work themselves, and were deliberately kept in the dark about what terrors would be visited upon them with each new day - so many of the screams you'll hear are genuine.
