Spider-Man PS4 Is Best-Selling Game of September

Marvel's Spider-Man beat out several other major titles to become the best-selling game of September. The highly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive has been breaking records since it was released on Sept. 7.

Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel's Spider-Man sends 23-year-old Peter Parker into the open world environment of New York City, where Spider-Man is free to explore, fight criminals, rescue innocent bystanders, and discover various landmarks of the Marvel Universe, such as Avengers Tower and the Sanctum Sanctorum. The game's story pits the wall-crawler against several classic Spider-Man villains, including Electro, Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture, and the Shocker.

Video game sales tracker NPD Group reports that Spider-Man outsold all other titles for the month of September and received the highest launch month dollar sales for a PlayStation exclusive ever. The game's month launch sales also exceeded the sales for past Spider-Man titles by a whopping 37 percent. However, it should be noted that the NPD Group's data doesn't go beyond 1995, when the company began tracking. Spider-Man is already the third best-selling game of 2018.

What's perhaps most impressive about Spider-Man's numbers is how well it's performed in comparison to other major releases, especially since most of its competition is available on multiple platforms, while Spider-Man is limited to one console. This didn't stop Spider-Man from topping video game sales for September. Second on the list is NBA 2K19, followed by Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, FIFA 19, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Madden NFL 19, Forza Horizon 4, Destiny 2, Super Mario Party, and NHL 19.

However, it's important to mention that of the games in the top 10, only NBA 2K19, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and NHL 2019 launched anywhere near the beginning of the sales period. Madden NFL 19 had been out for a month and Destiny 2 launched in 2017. Super Mario Party, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and FIFA 19 all came out during the end of the sales period, which was between the last few days of September and the first week of October. For this reason, it's hard to compare the sales for many of these games to Spider-Man.

Regardless, Spider-Man's success has never been questioned. Two weeks after launch, Sony announced that Spider-Man was the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation title in history, having sold 3.3 million copies in the span of three days. Given the number of records Marvel's Spider-Man has broken in such a short time, a sequel is already looking like a no-brainer.
