Original Sabrina TV Show Stars Offer 'Best Witches' to New Cast

Ahead of the release of season 1 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix, the stars of the '90s sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch have a message for the new cast. The new teen horror drama, which has already begun filming its second season, comes from the comic series of the same name and is similarly based around the Archie Comics character, albeit with a very different tone.

News of the series first broke in 2017, with Riverdale showrunner and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa at the helm. The show will center around Sabrina Spellman (played by Mad Men actress Kiernan Shipka in her first starring TV role) who, on the eve of her 16th birthday, is faced with a choice: Embrace the Satan-worshipping cult that the supernatural side of her family (including her aunts, Hilda and Zelda) belong to, or forsake her powers and live an ordinary, mortal life with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch).

If these characters sound familiar, it's because they're the core four of the TGIF staple that aired for seven seasons on ABC. It's been 15 years since the series went off the air, but now, the original stars have reached out to the actors taking over their roles. In a short video from Netflix, Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina), Nate Richert (Harvey), Caroline Rhea (Aunt Hilda), and Beth Broderick (Aunt Zelda), offer up their "best witches" and a little advice to Shipka, Lynch, Lucy Davis, and Miranda Otto in turn.

Hart, wearing a "Witches Be Crazy" t-shirt, sent her best to Shipka, and made a reference to Sabrina the Teenage Witch by suggesting that, if given the choice, to ride a vacuum over a broom. Richert acknowledged the "scarier and pretty damn twisted" nature of the new series and told Lynch he was rooting for him to "stay alive." Rhea congratulated Davis, joking that since the actress is taking over her old part, she'll take on Davis' Wonder Woman role as Etta Candy. And Broderick simply said how excited she is for the new show and for Otto.

Despite the repeated characters, it's pretty clear that the new series will be nothing like the old one. The sitcom, which was rife with plot holes, was a fun, silly half-hour teen comedy that saw Sabrina grow up, attend college, and find a happy ending. As old Harvey noted, things are going to be a lot different for Sabrina and company in Greendale as they deal with "a terrifying supernatural threat." Get ready for a very dark and "chilling" ride when Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is released in full.
