Marvel's NEW Winter Soldier is Out To Kill Bucky

The new Winter Soldier comic series is a dream come true for fans of Bucky Barnes. The bad news? He's going to be hunted by his Hydra replacement in just his second issue. Here's hoping the NEW Winter Soldier doesn't succeed in killing the MCU sweetheart.

Just as Bucky is making his own non-Captain America future in the movie universe, the recent announcement of a solo Winter Soldier comic series from Kyle Higgins and Rod Reis was long overdue (for the best possible reasons). Bucky Barnes has played a supporting role in Black Widow and Punisher's adventures lately, but in his own book, Bucky is setting out to help other people get the second chance he was given by his superhero friends.

Assuming the second Winter Soldier doesn't put a bullet in him first.

It isn't often that a movie superhero actually matches the version seen in current comics, but the Winter Soldiers seem to be a perfect fit. Just as Bucky was 'rebooted' ahead of Infinity War, the Bucky of the comics has also shed his villainous programming. Sure, Bucky died along with half the universe thanks to Thanos soon after. But if he had lived, the synopsis for the Winter Soldier comic actually sounds like the path the MCU Bucky would have loved to follow:

Bucky Barnes believes in second chances. Having escaped death, the loss of identity, and a life of murder, the man known as the Winter Soldier has worked hard to atone for his sins. But now…he’s going to go one step further. What do you do when you’ve found redemption? You help others do the same... He’s becoming a “fixer,” working to help others leave behind lives of crime. It’s Bucky’s way of channeling his own pain in a productive, personal way… by helping others find the redemption that he found. However, as Bucky is going to learn, not all paths are the same…and not everyone can be “saved.”

That suspicious tease of an un-save-able target was explained when Marvel released the cover art for Winter Soldier #2, putting Bucky in the crosshairs of... his younger self?

Was the Winter Soldier an understandable product of Cold War espionage? Perhaps. Does Hydra have cause to kill their former operative now that he's decided to be a force for good? They clearly think so. But let's be honest: dressing up Bucky's replacement, named "R.J." in a matching version of the costume he wore as Captain America's sidekick? That confirms this is completely personal. So, will Bucky's mission to save others in need mean he will try to help the second Winter Soldier hunting him down?

It's never too soon for fans to start crossing their fingers. Check out the full solicitation details for Winter Soldier #2 below:
