Daredevil star Charlie Cox isn’t sure if there will be a season 4 of Netflix's Marvel series. The once rock solid future of Marvel on Netflix has recently been thrown into serious question. Iron Fist was suddenly cancelled after a warmly received second season with Luke Cage being axed less than a week later. Luke Cage’s cancellation was even announced on the exact same date that Daredevil season 3 premiered.
There’s been a lot of speculation, whether it’s valid or not, that Netflix’s Marvel series will all take their final bow to make way for parent company Disney’s own streaming service, even though Netflix has confirmed that Disney can’t cancel any of the Marvel shows. Yet according to Cox, Daredevil could follow Luke Cage and Iron Fist into cancellation, but not for any business reasons. There just might not be any more story left to tell.

THR sat down with the Netflix actor to discuss the entirety of Daredevil season 3. At the end of the conversation, talk turned to a potential Daredevil season 4 and what it could entail. Cox explained:
At this point, I don't know if there's any intention of us doing more seasons. But were that to be the case, I think there's an interesting challenge for the writers, because I don't think we can do another season where Matt is so isolated, so alone, and so broken and angry. I think in order to avoid being a broken record, we're going to have to find a Matt Murdock that at least initially has a slightly different attitude toward the people that he loves, and toward himself, and toward God.
Cox's comments are far from a confirmation that Daredevil season 3 will be the last. They don't even confirm the actor isn't interested in continuing Matt Murdock's story. In the rest of the interview, Cox discussed hypotheticals for future Daredevil seasons including more appearances by Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. On a creative level, though, Charlie Cox is right. A new season of Daredevil would have to be different from anything that came before it, in tone if nothing else.
Daredevil season 3 could easily act the final season. Matt Murdock ends the season in about the happiest place he’s ever been in the series. He’s reunited with Karen and Foggy, Wilson Fisk is back in prison and Matt’s rocky relationship with his Catholic faith is on mostly solid footing. Daredevil season 3’s finale could very naturally become the character’s happy ending. There are a few loose threads, though. It would be repetitive for Wilson Fisk to break out of prison again, but Daredevil season 4 could easily tell more stories with Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye and his jailbreak. Yet if there is an ending point for Daredevil, season 3 is a pretty good one.
However, in the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just because something could be an ending doesn’t mean it will become one. Iron Man 3 was structured to be the end of Tony Stark’s story with him blowing up all his Iron Man suits, but the character has gone well beyond that point. In the comics, Daredevil has received several story arcs that could be viewed as finales too, only for them to be reversed or lead into new eras of the character’s development. Most interesting of all, though, is the fact that Daredevil’s showrunner, Erik Oleson, is "hopeful" Netflix will renew the series for season 4. So even if Cox doesn’t have any firm idea about where Matt’s story could go, it seems like the writers do - which is very important for Daredevil's survival.
