Charmed star Holly Marie Combs tells a crowd of fans that a movie with the original cast could happen. Combs has been vocally critical of CW's Charmed reboot, which premiered on Oct. 14. Although the revival has been highly controversial among fans, the premiere did well in ratings, and was even a slightly bigger draw than its lead-in show Supergirl with 1.54 million main demo viewers. Viewership for the second episode declined to 1.3 million. For fans who just want to see the Halliwell sisters again, hope apparently remains.
The reboot, which centers around the Vera-Vaughn sisters, has blatantly addressed present-day political turmoil and intersectional feminist ideologies so far. While Combs (Piper Halliwell), has publically wished the new series cast and creative team well, she hasn't retracted her disdain for CW's implication that the first series wasn't feminist or political enough. She even visibly supported a fan who criticized the network for the reboot's direction at one point. Her former on-screen sister and long-time friend Shannen Doherty (Prue Halliwell) has supported the reboot, calling any new opportunity for strong women to tell stories a good thing. Alyssa Milano (Phoebe Halliwell) stated that she wished the cast had been asked for input, but expressed hopes that the new series would inspire a new generation.

Recently, Combs appeared at the Paris Manga & Sci-Fi Show Expo to celebrate Charmed's 20th anniversary, along with her on-screen husband and whitelighter Brian Krause (Leo Wyatt). While she was hesitant when asked about a ninth season of the original show, which ended in 2006, saying, "I don’t know if a whole season [will happen], but maybe something." When asked if they might do a movie, Combs said, "Possibly. I say, never say never."
Since Charmed, like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, carried on in comic book form after the television series finale, a ninth season of show exists as a graphic novel. One of the storylines re-introduced Prue Halliwell, who was killed at the end of the third season, which could bring back Doherty - who also returned for a modern-day adaptation of her mean girls classic, Heathers. Many fans also assumed that any continuation of the original series would focus on Piper and Leo's children - Wyatt, Chris, and Melinda - who were seen regularly in the original run.
For Combs, the series is clearly personal and important. In fact, she's the only cast member to appear in every episode of the original show, since Milano wasn't in the original pilot, and Rose McGowan replaced Doherty in season 4. However, the reboot is more focused on reaching new audiences than previous fans. Macy Vaughn and Melanie and Maggie Vera crank out a hip pop-culture reference every few minutes, and their personal storylines have a more modern generation focus on self-discovery, compared to the Halliwells, who were largely preoccupied with careers and romance. Assuming the reboot keeps going, as in the case of every Kirk vs Picard argument, some fans are simply never going to agree which is better. But since it's already been established that parallel worlds exist in the Charmed universe, and that the Halliwell ancestry exists in the 2018 one, there's no good reason why there couldn't be more of both.
