Carlos Ezquerra, who was the co-creator of the comic book character Judge Dredd, has passed away at the age of 70. The Judge Dredd comic books take place in a dystopian future where the world has been struck with an incredibly high crime rate. Dredd is one of the many Street Judges who enforce the law around Mega-City One.
Joseph Dredd first appeared in the comic book 2000 AD #2 in March 1977. Ezquerra acted as the illustrator, while John Wagner wrote the comics, and Pat Mills edited them. Dredd has appeared in a number of comic books over the years, but his overall look has remained mostly what Ezquerra had originally envisioned. Apart from the comic books, Dredd has appeared in a number of video games as well as two movies. The first film came out in 1995 starring Sylvester Stallone, and the second was released in 2012 starring Karl Urban. While the first film was panned by critics, the second film was praised for capturing the essence of what Wagner and Ezquerra created in the comic books.

According to THR, Ezquerra passed away after a long battle with lung cancer at the age of 70. Ezquerra had overcome the disease in 2010, which unfortunately came back this year. Besides being the co-creator and artist behind Judge Dredd, Ezquerra had worked on titles such as Strontium Dog, Just a Pilgrim, and The Stainless Steel Rat. Dredd star Karl Urban even posted a picture of the comic book character to commemorate the passing of the comic book legend. His full tweet can be seen below.
Even though fans have been begging for Dredd 2 for years now, it appears the character will be returning for a Dredd TV series instead. A live action series titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One has been in development since last year, and Urban is willing to return. While people will remain hopeful as the series is developed, people are unlikely to forget the man that co-created the character. Ezquerra may be gone, but his work in the comic book industry will never be forgotten.
2018 has already been a hard year for comic book fans. In July, Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko passed away and the comic world has been flooded with reports of Stan Lee's elder abuse. To many readers, Ezquerra was just as important in the comic industry as Ditko and Lee. Much like other comic book illustrators, Ezquerra's work on Judge Dredd will live on for years to come.
