The Beach Bum Trailer: Matthew McConaughey Is A Wild Stoner

In the new trailer for The Beach Bum, Matthew McConaughey stays true to his pop culture image, only his character does far more than just sit around and enjoy the good life. Instead, "Moondog" appears to be on a path to somewhere glorious, leaving his friends and associates curious about the journey.

Written and directed by indie icon Harmony Korine, The Beach Bum represents the long-awaited follow-up to the 2012 film Spring Breakers. Led by James Franco and Selena Gomez, the controversial crime film outperformed its $5 million budget six times over, and marked the first big hit for the now-popular A24. For Korine’s new film, he cast McConaughey as a stoner slacker, seemingly a cinematic relative of The Big Lebowski’s The Dude. In contrast to the Coen brothers classic, however, The Beach Bum appears to have a more transcendental narrative, at least based on the first visuals.

Today, Neon released a 67-second red band clip for The Beach Bum. To begin, McConaughey’s colorfully clad Moondog inquires about acid to a convenience store clerk, and in the same manner of speech that the actor himself is famously known for. Once Tommy James & The Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover” begins, the clip shifts to Moondog’s self-image as a poet, complete with supporting visuals in which the character smashes a piano and enjoys himself with two women.

There are familiar stoner themes - bongos, strange outfits, and marijuana, of course - and the clip goes all in with Moondog’s carefree lifestyle by highlighting various antics that seem fun for him, even if they don’t necessarily impress others. While the trailer mostly glorifies Moondog, it concludes by suggesting that he’s in store for a personal awakening.

Alongside McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Stefania LaVie Owen, Zac Efron, Martin Lawrence, and even singer Jimmy Buffett are acknowledged in the red band trailer. Still, the focus is clearly on Moondog's contagious charisma, along with all the bright lights and the cinematic experience the film seems to promise. The Beach Bum will be distributed by the aforementioned Neon, which has found an industry niche over the past two years by releasing popular indies like Ingrid Goes West, Revenge, and the wildly successful I, Tonya. On September 21, Neon’s Assassination Nation will be released nationwide, and the new The Beach Bum trailer will undoubtedly be a topic of conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival over the next two weeks.

Though The Beach Bum may not be the ultimate acting challenge for McConaughey, he and Korine may have a few tricks up their sleeve. Or maybe their collaboration is purely a celebration of the stoner archetype.
