Supergirl Movie Rumor: Brainiac Currently Expected To Be The Villain

A new rumor has started circulating around the internet suggesting that Brainiac could be the main villain for the Supergirl movie. It’s been a wild, rumor-filled week for the DCEU, with some suggesting that Superman himself Henry Cavill could be stepping down from the role while others, including Cavill’s agent, say he’ll be sticking around. With Cavill’s future as Superman uncertain, yet more rumors have suggested that Warner Bros. is focusing their efforts on bringing Clark Kent’s Kryptonian cousin Kara to the big screen for her own solo Supergirl movie.

Even before the rumors of Cavill’s departure started to pop up, Warner Bros. was reportedly in the early stages of producing a Supergirl film, even hiring 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel to pen the script. The studio has also apparently been looking to recreate the circumstances that led to their highly successful Wonder Woman movie by hiring a female director to helm the project, with names like Reed Morano being considered. Now, however, it’s rumored that the Supergirl film has potentially found its villain.

According to Daniel R at SuperBroMovies, the plan for now is for Brainiac to step into the villain role for the Supergirl movie. This rumor builds on another rumor that Supergirl will take place in the 1970s, long before Cavill’s Superman is around.

Naturally, rumors like this should be taken with a giant grain of salt and it would not be the first time that this particular source has gotten it wrong. However, bringing such an epic villain like Brainiac to the big screen for the first time would certainly be a great way to make Supergirl a must-see film for comic fans. It also wouldn’t be the first time that Brainiac has been mentioned by someone associated with the DCEU, with Cavill himself stating months ago that he’d like the character to be the main villain for Man of Steel 2.

With Cavill’s future as the Man of Steel currently in doubt, it’s certainly possible that Warner Bros. took that idea and implemented it instead for their Supergirl movie. It also might be a little strange for the character to show up as opposition to Supergirl before Superman, considering how much of a major adversary he’s been to the comic version of the latter. Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that DC and Warner Bros. has altered or outright changed the mythos of characters compared to their comic counterpart. For now, fans will simply have to wait and see if rumors of Brainiac’s involvement in Supergirl has any merit.
