Rick and Morty has officially picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in the award ceremony’s 70th iteration. Since its debut back in 2013, Rick and Morty has become arguably one of the most popular shows, animated or otherwise, currently airing. In fact, its popularity is so far-reaching that one of its many appropriately wacky storylines inspired fast food giant McDonald’s to bring back its Mulan-inspired Szechuan Sauce, which proved to be an extremely popular move.
Cartoon Network also seems to have a lot of faith in Rick and Morty – which was created by Justin Roiland and Community creator Dan Harmon – since the network recently ordered 70 more episodes of the show in a massive multi-year deal with Harmon and Roiland. In spite of Rick and Morty’s extreme popularity with fans and critics, the animated program had never been nominated for an Emmy before this year’s big win.

Per Deadline, Rick and Morty picked up its first win at the Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program, with the award going to the show’s highly lauded “Pickle Rick” episode from season 3. Another episode from the season, “Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality,” was also nominated for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media within a Scripted Program, but failed to pick up the win.
While Rick and Morty’s win was not presented live on television (the pre-taped Creative Arts Emmys ceremony won't be aired until Saturday, September 15), it's still a huge win for the show. It’s also a bit of a surprise given the fact that co-creator Harmon was recently embroiled in controversy, after an old offensive video was discovered by conservatives on the popular site 4chan. The controversy could help explain why Roiland did all of the heavy lifting when it came time to accept the award, and offer the usual thanks.
Either way, Rick and Morty is arguably at the height of its popularity thanks to its most critically acclaimed season yet, so the show winning its first Emmy is probably the most appropriate way to cap off that accomplishment. With that in mind, the wait for season 4 could be a long one if the show’s history is anything to go by. The wait between seasons 2 and 3 was over two years, and given how long it took Cartoon Network to give the series its huge renewal - and how long it takes Roiland and Harmon to produce the episodes - it’s feasible that it could be another two years before fans see more Rick and Morty.
