Mark Hamill shared a fan-made Star Wars and Back To The Future mashup on his Instagram account early this morning. The iconic actor seemed to find amusement in the fan's clever combination.
Best known for his signature role as Luke Skywalker in George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy, Hamill has attained a legendary status among fans of sci-fi and fantasy. In more recent years, Hamill has moved onto other projects, including a role in the Kyle Mooney-led Brigsby Bear, and one on the historical fiction show Knightfall, in addition to a wide variety of voiceover work. Yet, he hasn't completely left his most beloved character behind, as the J.J. Abrams' produced revival trilogy have given Skywalker a second life of sorts; Hamill is again set to appear in the upcoming, highly anticipated, Star Wars: Episode IX.

Sharing the fan art to his Instagram, Hamill captioned the photo: "#EmpireStrikesBackToTheFuture (#RetroRerun)". Hamill's face supplants Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly in two stills from Back To The Future. There's also a Jabba the Hutt appearance – taking the place of BTTF villain Biff, while Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi) stands in place of Christopher Lloyd (Dr. Emmett Brown). The fan also swapped the face of Marty's father for Luke's father Anakin Skywalker. The true genius behind the fan art is the way these characters play similar roles in both films; the Obi-Wan and Luke, mentor and mentee relationship is similar to that of Doc and Marty.
This fan art stands as a testament to the fact that Mark Hamill and the original Star Wars actors are held in high esteem among fans to this day. It's part of the reason why the Star Wars fandom was rocked by the death of their Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher, in December 2016. Her tragic death also brought up questions for the franchise, set to move forward with new installments. Should Leia be recast? Recently, it's been stated that Fisher will, in fact, appear in the upcoming release through the use of previously unused footage, with the blessing of her daughter. Hamill also agrees with the franchise's choice not to recast his onscreen sibling.
With the buzz surrounding the new Star Wars movies, fans continue to pay homage to the classics that started it all. The decision to use footage of Carrie Fisher emphasizes Lucasfilm's acknowledgement of the love fans have for the original trilogy. Here's hoping the franchise as a whole can recover from the box office flop of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and return to its former glory. Otherwise, fans might be wishing they could hop in Doc Brown's time machine and rewrite history.
