Game of Thrones' Kit Harington Wanted to Play Harry Potter

He's the star of one of the most successful TV series of all time, but Game of Thrones' Kit Harrington admits he really just wanted to play Harry Potter. The fantastical film series based on J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels of the same name kicked off in the early 2000s with an 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe playing the titular character in Chris Columbus' Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Due to the popularity of the first film and the novels, it became an eight-part movie series accumulating $7.7 billion at the global box office making it one of the most successful franchises of all time.

The Harry Potter movie franchise started way before Harrington dabbled in acting, but he says he has always wanted to play the character. Harrington first started as a theater actor, appearing in the critically acclaimed play, War Horse. However, it wasn't until 2011 that he became a household name, portraying the role of Jon Snow in HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones. The gig landed him several acting nominations including Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, as well as a Critics Choice Television Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Speaking with EW during Toronto International Film Festival where he's promoting his latest movie, Xavier Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, Harrington shared his aspirations of bringing the Boy Who Lived to life on the screen. “I always wanted to be in a Potter movie. I always wanted to be Harry Potter,” he said.

While it's too late for Harrington to play Harry on the big screen considering that the part is so strongly associated with Radcliffe, there might still be a chance for him to join a film in the franchise. Warner Bros. and Rowling are building a brand new franchise set in the Wizarding World with the Fantastic Beasts film series. Headlined by Eddie Redmayne, who plays Newt Scamander, the new series was kicked off with 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and is set to be followed by Fantastic Beasts and the Crimes of Grindelwald this fall. Given that there are three more confirmed films in the prequel saga, it's not outside the realm of possibility that Harrington can nab a role especially since he's about to have more free time with Game of Thrones already ending.

Whether or not Harrington lands a Fantastic Beasts gig, fans of the actor will be thrilled to know that he already has a few gigs lined up after Game of Thrones wraps up next year. First, he'll be once again providing the voice of Eret in Dean DeBlois' How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. He's also set to return to theatre with True West where he will play Austin.
