Treyarch has finally revealed a gameplay video for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s highly anticipated new Battle Royale game mode, Blackout. Back when the game was announced earlier this year, many fans were skeptical of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 due to its complete removal of any sort of campaign mode. This was alleviated somewhat when a new Battle Royale game mode, Blackout, was announced to take its place.
Obviously done in an effort to compete with extremely popular Battle Royale games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Treyarch’s Blackout mode will mark the Call of Duty series’ first foray into combat on such a large scale (the upcoming beta for Blackout will support up to 80 players at a time). Still, with how much is known about the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 game mode, there still hasn’t been much in the way of actual gameplay footage released by Activision or Treyarch. That is, until now.

Treyarch has officially released a gameplay video (available above) finally detailing exactly what Blackout will look like on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The trailer, which runs just over two minutes, packs in quite a lot of information, including footage of the vehicles available in the mode, squad-based combat and even zombies. Treyarch also released an image of the official map for Blackout, which is the largest map ever for a Call of Duty title and can be viewed below.
Now that more is known about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode, it’s easy to say that Treyarch’s idea of a Battle Royale is starting to look impressive. The fast-paced combat that all Call of Duty games are widely known for is obviously priority one for the developer, an impressive feat considering the slower pace of most Battle Royale match types. Perhaps more impressive, it seems Treyarch is using Call of Duty’s past to influence Blackout right down to the development of its map, which is basically a mashup of previous multiplayer maps combined into one large map.
Also worth noting is the inclusion of zombies, though it’s unclear how they’ll be implemented naturally into Blackout. One option, assuming the match type follows other Battle Royale games, is to use the often recurring Call of Duty antagonists as a consequence for not keeping inside of the ever-shrinking circled safe zone. Again, this is just a possible option, though fans will certainly find out shortly when the beta drops. Either way, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode is shaping up to be a nice addition to the Call of Duty franchise and could help the series compete with the likes of Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
