Exclusive: 'Chained To The Grave' Creative Process Revealed By IDW

Warning: contains a preview for the mature series, Chained to the Grave!

Screen Rant is pleased to share an exclusive look at the creative process behind IDW Publishing's Chained To The Grave. This supernatural western comic is going to be collected into a trade volume later this year. It combines magic, revenge, and the Old West with vibrant art.

Chained to the Grave has the creative team of Andy Eschenbach, Brian Level, Kate Sherron, and Micah Meyers. Roy Mason, the main character, is a dead man walking - literally. After falling into a gold plot that caused him to lose his life, he has returned from the dead. He must protect the family he left behind and end a magical being's vendetta against him. This IDW series began publishing this past February and released its fifth and final issue in July. Now, the series will be collected into a volume, available this Winter.

IDW has shared a behind-the-scenes look at the development of the series. Comic creation is a lengthy process from start to finish that takes a lot of collaboration. This look includes a peek at the script for a page from the series, the colored artwork developed from that script, and finally, a preview of the finished product complete with lettering. This particular page focuses on Big Bad, the villain of Chained to the Graveand provides an intriguing description of his character. Check out the process here:

Big Bad, within the script, is described as a mix of Nick Cave, Adam Driver, and Prince. This combination of two singers and the actor who portrayed Star Wars' Kylo Ren is an unexpected mix, though it certainly explains the performative demeanor that Big Bad appears to have in his stances. It also provides additional insight into his character, revealing his vanity, his towering stature, and the briefest glimpse at his abilities. It also reveals what fuels his magic - hate. These little insights add significant development and a peek at new comic character design inspirations that readers typically don't have the chance to see. Here is the finished product - and a preview of what lies in store for readers:

Chained to the Grave from IDW pairs vibrant art with horror and western elements in an unexpected blend, as seen above. Roy may have thought his troubles were at their highest just before he died, but it seems as though they're just getting started. The tombstone-toting hero has a lot to deal with and a clearly dangerous foe on his trail. Big Bad is a charismatic, evil sorcerer and unlike Roy, this IDW series' villain's pocket mirror isn't a pocket stopwatch containing a photo to remember a loved one - he's purely out for his own gain. Comic fans looking for a new take on classic western tropes can read the story in its entirety when IDW releases Chained to the Grave: Collection on December 7.
