Darth Vader is Clueless About Darth Maul's Legacy After the Sith

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #3.

The latest Star Wars event, War of the Bounty Hunters, has revealed that Darth Vader never learned about Darth Maul's mysterious activities after the Clone Wars. Introduced in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, the monstrous visage of Maul was a major part of marketing for the first film in the prequel trilogy. George Lucas made a big mistake killing Darth Maul, and he corrected it in Star Wars: The Clone Wars when he brought the Sith Apprentice back from the dead.

Palpatine's discarded pawn returned to the board as a player in his own right, adding an additional layer of complexity to the Clone Wars; a third force with a different agenda, one who threatened the plans of Jedi and Sith alike. Maul came close to undoing all of Palpatine's schemes, and he engineered the Siege of Mandalore as a way to get his hands on Anakin Skywalker - an attempt that failed, simply because he hadn't realized Darth Sidious' endgame was in motion. As revealed in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Maul went on to found the criminal empire Crimson Dawn as a way of making in-roads into the Empire and undermining it.

Crimson Dawn faded into obscurity during the Dark Times, but the latest Star Wars comic book event, War of the Bounty Hunters, has revealed that the organization attempted to make a return on the galactic stage during the Galactic Civil War - long after Maul's death. Strikingly, in Charles Soule, Luke Ross and David Messina's Star Wars: Rise of the Bounty Hunters #3, Darth Vader comes face-to-face with Crimson Dawn's leader Qi'ra. The two engage in a duel, with Vader surprised at her knowledge of the the art of Teräs Käsi, which is designed to give non-Force-sensitives a chance against Jedi and Sith. Surprisingly, Vader is particularly concerned to figure out who trained Qi'ra in Teräs Käsi, suggesting he does not associate Darth Maul with Crimson Dawn.

Darth Vader no doubt has good reason to focus on this issue. Since he doesn't know Darth Maul was ever involved with Crimson Dawn, he is presumably concerned Qi'ra could have been trained by a Jedi who survived Order 66. Vader and his Inquisitors had been tasked with scouring the galaxy for all possible Force-sensitives, so this possibility would mean the Dark Lord of the Sith failed in one of his most important missions. Even more worryingly, this would mean there could be another Jedi out there who could train Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, given this comic is set shortly before Return of the Jedi.

Darth Maul's plans during the Dark Times are currently something of a mystery. Crimson Dawn allied with the Empire at first, with crime lord Dryden Vos serving as it public face in order to prevent the Emperor from realizing his former Sith Apprentice was involved. But the very fact Darth Maul trained his agents in Teräs Käsi suggests he anticipated an eventual confrontation, with Crimson Dawn's leaders going up against Darth Vader himself.
