Warning! Spoilers for Heroes Reborn #4 ahead!
As a hero, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, is a bit of an oddball. Obsessed with the existence of aliens, he managed to get himself into outer space like he dreamed, but he isn’t the most likely candidate for super-heroics. In fact, according to Marvel’s new Heroes Reborn universe, without other heroes like the Avengers, Star-Lord is a total loser.
Marvel’s newest, wildest event, Heroes Reborn, offers readers a glimpse inside a world where the Avengers never existed. Instead, heroes like Tony Stark, Carol Danvers, Peter Parker and many others remain in their unremarkable lives, unaware they were ever a part of anything greater. Instead, the world is protected by the comically jingoistic Squadron Supreme. Only one Avenger was left untouched by the strange changes—the vampire-slaying Blade. Certain that something has gone terribly wrong, Blade sets out to correct the world and assemble the Avengers again.
It’s not just the Earth that has been changed, however. In Heroes Reborn #4, by Jason Aaron, James Stokoe, and Ed McGuinness, readers discover that even the far reaches of outer space and the characters who inhabit it have not escaped the warping of reality. Deep in space, Rocket Raccoon and his “gun” Groot agree to take on the job of killing Marvel’s Green Lantern facsimile, Doctor Spectrum. During the fight, Rocket, who even in this new universe has an eye for unique items, quips that he could sell Doctor Spectrum’s cosmic prism to “crazy old Quill on the junk moon.” The Squadron hero and his prism, however, are not quite such an easy match, despite Rocket and Groot initially getting the upper hand.
Rocket’s reference to “crazy Quill” makes it clear that Star-Lord’s hopes and dreams of leaving Earth were realized, even if he didn’t quite reach the same heights as he did with the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers. The ripple effect of the universe is long and it seems that without the influence of the Avengers, Quill’s obsession with space and his long history of being looked down on and ignored continues even in space. His origin story was halted, unlike characters like Captain Marvel or Spider-Man, who never got a chance at their origin story at all.
It seems space will always be the wild west of the Marvel universe. Rocket and Groot’s startlingly similar existence as space outlaws in this new universe is certainly noteworthy, as is the existence of the Guardians of the Galaxy-like crew of space pirates known simply as the Spacejammers, which Doctor Spectrum comments on having taken out. It’s probably good that Star-Lord is nothing more than a crazy guy on a junk planet, because without the existence of the Avengers, it seems that being an outlaw in the Heroes Reborn universe is a lot more dangerous than ever before.
