Creepiest Pokémon, From Gen 1 To Sword & Shield | Screen Rant

Since the Pokémon franchise began in 1995, hundreds of Pokémon have been introduced, with each subsequent game introducing new entries to the Pokédex. These Pokémon have a wide array of personalities, designs and powers - and some of them end up being fairly creepy.

Certain types of Pokémon have a tendency to be more obviously scary than others. Ghost type Pokémon, for example, are often designed after spirits or demons. Many of their Pokédex entries even go on to describe how they're thought to be connected to death by characters within the Pokémon series.

However, some of the creepiest Pokémon are the deceptively adorable ones - their harmless appearance easily tricks people into falling for their traps or ignoring their dangerous and sometimes even downright scary nature. While these Pokémon may not seem all that creepy at first glance, their Pokédex entries reveal just how disturbing they actually are.

An adorable dual type Ghost-Fairy Pokémon, Mimikyu disguises itself as a Pikachu in order to appear less scary. This might be because its true form is so terrifying that it's enough to shock people to death, in the most literal sense. It also doesn't take kindly to anyone who tries to remove its disguise, and the Pokédex in Pokémon Sword and Shield reveals that it will do anything to take down those who reveal its secret - even at the cost of its own life.

Phantump prefers to hang around abandoned forests, and it's easy to tell why just from looking at it: these Pokémon are actually adorable spirits that possess rotten tree stumps. There's more to it, though - the Pokédex specifically says that Phantumps are the spirits of children who died in the forest. Their cries mimic screams in order to lead people deep into the woods, aiming to trick them into getting lost just so it can make new friends.

First introduced in Pokémon White and Black, Lampent seems innocent enough. Its cute appearance, though, is part of why it's so eerie. Lampents will hang around cities, particularly hospitals, and pretend to be an ordinary lamp... up until it starts quietly following people around. It turns out that Lampents are thought to be emissaries of death, as it can sense when someone is about to die. Once they've passed on, it will then absorb their spirits as fuel for its fire.

While he might not be as blatantly foreboding as some of the other Pokémon listed here, there's definitely something creepy about Mr. Mime. Maybe it's the resemblance to clowns, or the fact that it slaps around anyone who interrupts it while it mimes. Or perhaps it's just odd because of how humanoid it is. Regardless of the reasoning, Mr. Mime is one of the most unsettling Pokémon to be found in the original Pokédex, and arguably set the bar for disturbing characters featured in the Pokémon series.
