WoW Shadowlands' Windwalker Monk DPS Build (& All Talents) Explained

In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, the Monk class is among the most versatile, meaning it also can be among the most confusing and require the most explanation. Knowing which WoW talents to choose can be a daunting undertaking, especially when trying to squeeze the most DPS out of a build.

For a Windwalker Monk in Shadowlands, the good news is that almost every talent is a viable option. The bad news is that almost every available talent is a viable option, making it difficult to know which to choose. There are only a few talents that are a hard-pass, and the others can be picked as matters of personal preference, or multi- versus single-target situations. Generally, each tier of talents has a central 'theme' to them and will also feature a split between single-target and AoE focused abilities.

The first tier, for example, has WoW talents that are all about healing. Each talent has a damage component, and heal associated with them. Eye of the Tiger applies a Damage over Time effect to an enemy, while also placing a Heal over Time onto the monk. Chi Wave is a chain heal that can also bounce to enemies, damaging them. Chi Burst is a big AoE that harms enemies and heals allies. Eye of the Tiger is a fine pick, with Chi Burst being the preferred choice in AoE heavy scenarios in Shadowlands.

Tier 2 is all about mobility in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Celerity offers an extra charge of Roll while also reducing its cooldown, Chi Torpedo increases the distanced cover by Roll and gives a 30% speed boost, and Tiger's Lust grants players the ability to remove roots/snares from themselves (or others) alongside a large, 70% movement boost. There isn't a 'wrong' choice here, and personal preference is going to be the deciding factor. Tiger's Lust does add a bit of flexibility in that it can be used to help out other WoW party members, as opposed to the other two.

The third tier features talents based around resource boosts. Energizing Elixir grants 2 Chi and 75 energy over time, making it useful in AoE scenarios where a World of Warcraft player can immediately spend those new resources. Ascension gives 1 Chi, boosts energy gain by 10%, and increases maximum energy by 20 - it's the weakest of the three. Fist of the White Tiger is an attack that generates 3 Chi, and is the default choice for this tier.

Tier 4 has some crowd-control options in Tiger Tail Sweep and Ring of Peace. Tiger Tail Sweep improves Leg Sweep, but is generally skipped. Ring of Peace creates a zone of control that enemies cannot enter, which is useful in many dungeon situations. The last talent of this section, Good Karma, boosts Touch of Karma to provide healing as well as damage deflection - a useful talent in Shadowlands' end-game raids.

The fifth tier is the damage reduction tier. Inner Strength reduces damage with each Chi spent, but doesn't compete with the other two on offer for this tier. Diffuse Magic diffuses magic, and Dampen Harm diffuses physical attacks, and players should pick whichever best reflects the type of damage they are encountering most often from World of Warcraft's bosses and enemies.

The sixth tier focuses on the main role of WoW's Windwalker Monk, dealing damage. Hit Combo offers a 1%, stacking damage boost on Combo Strikes, making it the must-have talent for single-target fights. Rushing Jade Wind turns the Monk into a whirling tornado that strikes the enemies nearby, but lacks the raw damage output to make it a viable pick. Dance of Chi-Ji is the go-to AoE pick for this tier, as it boosts the damage and uses of Spinning Crane Kick.

The final tier is the Whirling Dragon Punch tier. It outpaces the other choices, making it the best pick here. It's an AoE punch that becomes available when other damage-dealing abilities are on cooldown, giving the Monk more damage dealing options. Spiritual Focus and Serenity offer cooldown reductions, and an underwhelming damage boost, respectively. All said, a single-target focused build should look like this:

  • Eye of the Tiger
  • Tiger's Lust
  • Fist of the White Tiger
  • Good Karma
  • Diffuse Magic
  • Hit Combo
  • Whirling Dragon Punch

For players looking to get the most out of their DPS-focused Windwalker Monks in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, it's best to pick talents that fit the scenario - mainly AoE versus single-target. Beyond that, it's mostly a matter of personal choice. Save those few 'bad' picks discussed above, it's hard to go wrong.
