Dystopian thriller series The Handmaid's Tale has been renewed for season 5 at Hulu, ahead of its season 4 premiere in 2021. Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale stars Elisabeth Moss in the leading role as June Osborne, a woman who is enslaved within the brutal theocratic nation of Gilead.
The Handmaid's Tale season 3 concluded in August 2019, and season 4 began filming in March 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, production had to be halted after just a few weeks, and The Handmaid's Tale season 4's premiere was pushed back. During Disney's Investor Day presentation it was reaffirmed that The Handmaid's Tale will now premiere in 2021, along with the announcement that the series has received an early renewal for season 5. The Handmaid's Tale season 4 will consist of four episodes, but the length of season 5 has yet to be confirmed.
The move is indicative of Hulu's confidence in The Handmaid's Tale, which is the streaming service's longest-running original series. Creator and showrunner Bruce Miller responded to the news, saying, "We are thrilled to be able to continue to tell these stories, with our incredible cast and crew, and can’t wait to be back on the air with season 4 next year.”
The Handmaid's Tale season 3 ended with a cliffhanger as June's life was left hanging in the balance, and her former owners Commander Waterford and Serena Joy received a comeuppance for their crimes. Filming on The Handmaid's Tale season 4 resumed in September 2020, so hopefully the wait for the show's return won't be too long.
