Disney Parks release app that allows fans to build their own Star Wars droid at home. With the effects of COVID-19 still making public gatherings in many places an impossibility, alternatives to events and celebrations are continuously being sought. Much debate has ensued over the past several weeks throughout the COVID lockdown, regarding how and when major attractions such as Disney’s theme parks can reopen. Recent projections have showed the huge amount of money that Disney stands to lose from keeping their parks closed, and some estimates have revealed that things may not get back to normal again until 2021 at the earliest. While no one wants this to be the case, the severity of the coronavirus continues to dictate the rules.
For Star Wars fans, this May the 4th would have been the first Star Wars day in which both of Disney’s Star Wars attractions were open for business. Celebrating all things Star Wars related would have been an entirely different experience at either Galaxy’s Edge park in California or Florida. As a result, fans are being given new ways to celebrate May the 4th and Revenge of the Fifth that don’t involve public gatherings.
One such method has been revealed courtesy of StarWars.com. In an effort to bring a little bit of Star Wars and Galaxy’s Edge to fans for Star Wars Day, a new app has been released which allows fans to build their own virtual droids. In addition to this, The Droid Depot mobile app provides users with the opportunity to sync up their Droid Depot astromerch unit, enabling different choices of music and virtual paths around one’s own home. The app is available for free and can be found at either Google Play or the App Store for download.

The ability to create an entire collection of virtual droids is a unique one for Star Wars fans, allowing the choice over dome and body type as well as name. The app also allows users to decide what sort of affiliation their newly constructed droid will have, with “scoundrel” being one of the numerous options. The app does seem to favor those who have already purchased one of the Galaxy’s Edge Droid Depot astromerch units, given the variety of music and personalized paths that a Droid Depot droid can utilize. However, being able to create and store a number of virtual droids can still be a lot of fun, and for those who feel that they simply must have one of the Galaxy’s Edge droids, pre-built versions of BB-8 and R2-D2 are available for the first time from Disney’s online shop - though this is a limited time offer.
Being able to create an array of virtual droids is an excellent way to celebrate both May the 4th and Revenge of the Fifth. As previously mentioned, the coronavirus pandemic has made major changes to the ways that all of us live our lives, but thankfully, little things like this Disney Parks app can help add a touch of normality to the lives of Star Wars fans. As fans know from the films, a good droid will stick with you through the good times as well as the bad.
